Have always been a huge fan of vintage photography. Love the tones, shadows and just the 'style' in general. I know its not possible to get this directly from the camera (correct me if Im wrong) because monochrome is not quite vintage.

So,how do I do it?

What can I do to either of these to get that vintage 'feel' and 'texture'? Only editing programs I have are DPP and photomatix. The pics were processed in DPP,and I think they look good, but not great. Any ideas?

By the way - I poked around the forum looking for something along this idea but didnt find anything. If I missed it throw it my way :)..

I used to think I was indecisive, but now I'm not too sure.

Get Photoshop, a quick curves adjustment, and texture layer would give you the look you're after. Seriously, get photoshop.

Even lightroom would give you more tools. Your conversions are okay, but you can do a lot more toning in photoshop or lightroom.

Free software that works very good. http://www.optikvervelabs.com/default.asp (external link)
VirtualPhotographer is a Photoshop plugin but you can run it as a stand alone using VirtualStudio.
You can add texture, black and white, film grain, etc.. Not a substitute in any way for PS but will give you an no cost option.

Love this look!! This is my goal. But buying a totally different camera setup is not an option for many options. But this is nice!

I know PS has tons of editing options but for now buying it is not an option. So,Im going to play with the free program and see how it goes, but thanks for the input, much appreciated!

If Im not mistaken LR is cheaper than PS,so if my just downloaded virtual studio doesnt give me the results I want I may try LR. Thanks for the input.

You get a free 30 day trial when you download Ps from the adobe site. Worth a try.

Also, check out this tumblr page, has some pretty awesome vintage photos from MD, could provide some good inspiration !

Thats so odd...I was just looking at that site today. My strongest inspiration comes from a handfull of very nice reproduction pictures that are posted at the shop where I work,in the office. Very nice shots of historic Baltimore. I have a book,Baltimore - Before and After. Aswome book with some amazing photos! Very inspiring!! Sooo much has changed over the years. But regaurdless of the changes, the vintage pictures are just awsome! Then I read this today - http://oldphoto.com/Old%20Photo%20ID.htm (external link) - amazing to know what the old photogs went thru to get the images they got (thank you Lord for my digital camera, lol).

Thanks again for the info - as I sit and type this Lightroom is downloading. The Virtualstudio is cool, but seems like a extra advanced Photomatix - which is cool but I dont see the ability to achieve what Im looking for (or Im doing it wrong ).

Edit - seems my computer is too old. Need windows 7 or later. Always something, lol. Back to the drawing board...

Try and apply a few settings at different opacity and see what you get. Like I said, no substitute.

LR has a bunch of vintage like presets and there are tons you can download (free and paid for) online. And then tweak to your liking. Great software with a lot to offer, you don't need to shell out big $ for PS to get this look. Assorted plugins (Nik, OnOne, etc) also offer vintage looks. A lot cheaper than PS would be, and not such a steep learning curve.

I'm sure if you google or look on youtube you'll also find lots of tips on how to get there.

LR is the easiest, use presets or drag saturation all the way to the left and play with the color sliders.
