I'm sorry for posting a link rather than pics, but the rules prohibit posting this many pics.

My wife feeds some feral cats and 2 nights ago, she looked out and saw this cat chasing off a raccoon. It is larger than the feral cats and all of them are large males except for one female.
It has a very short tail, maybe 3-4" long and it doesn't run like the other cats, it jumps more than runs.

I'd appreciate help identifying it. It looks sort of like a bobcat and their range does extend to my area, but it doesn't seem to have any tufts on the ears like most of them. Any ideas?
BTW, I live on the outskirts of the Memphis, TN area and have over 60 acres of woods less than a 1/4 of a mile away and 100's of acres of farmland about a mile from me.

I'm no feline expert, but it just looks like a large feral to me. Maybe has a bit of Maine Coon in him. Life in the wild for these guys can be very rough. Could be how he lost his tail.

Of course, it could also be a cross between feral and bobcat (remote possibility).

I don't know what kind of cat it is, but he certainly does move differently than a regular cat. He is a pretty cat. Oh, by the way, I like your pig planter! As long as your photos are hosted on Flickr, you can share more than 2.

Yep. That makes sense.

That's what it looks like to me, too. Probably not the friendliest critter in the neighborhood...but likely a good survivor :)

Thanks for your opinions. It does look similar to a pic of a Manx that I found, although they are supposed to be small to medium sized cats and this one is large. An article I saw on a Manx said they hop like a rabbit and this one has a strange way of running, but I don't think it resembles a rabbit.

As some have suggested, it could be a mix of some sort. I'm not a cat person and had never heard of a Manx or a Maine Coon until reading your responses, which is why I asked for help identifying it.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Interesting video, but this one doesn't seem to have extra toes.

I've been looking around on the internet to see if there is a breed of cat with some of the characteristics of this one and found an "American Bobtail". Is anyone familiar with this breed and if so, could this be one?

This is a juvenile bobcat. Similar although your cat's tail looks like it was whacked off instead of born that way to me. If yours is full grown he looks a bit on the small side for an adult bobcat.
