Agree 100% rivas, my 85 is really my diamond in the rough. It just works no matter what I throw at it. I don't use/have a hood, but I do occasionally use the old 5 finger hood when I get flare that I don't like in my images.

The terrible OEM lens hood for the 85 1.8 is canon's reminder that every rose has its thorn.

With telephotos like the 85, the hood does an excellent job of lens protection since it's big. But when you go wide angle, those hoods do little to protect the front element. I have a few other lenses with hoods (my L's) and they seem to work well. The petal hood on the 17-40 takes a little get used to, but I only use them occasionally to deal with unwanted flare. Maybe I need to break them out and use them more often to see if it helps with contrast as others have mentioned. Name is Ron.

The 85 1.8 has a terribly designed mount which requires you to use a pinch tab, not the usual push and turn bayonet mount.
