Heya,
I keep wondering why Canon hasn't produced a consumer grade weather resistant camera. I know the 7D has some weather resistance, but not a lot. Nothing like the top tier. They make lenses that are affordable with weather sealing, and 3rd party lenses can be had with weather sealing. But they're not going to do much with a camera that isn't weather sealed. I've always wondered why these "top" cameras in the sense of cameras, are so completely exposed. It doesn't have to be straight water proof. But being able to be exposed to some rain, splashes, etc, would be a nice peace of mind.
The more I think of the 7D2, the more I think of these features as being critical to me, in order to secure me as a buyer:
1 - Superior ISO performance. Definitely want to see ISO 3200/6400 as a usable ISO range and not just the top of the range and really messy looking. On the same sensor right now as the 7D, I find ISO 800 to be my threshold where I don't feel like I'm looking at a mess. Getting 3 more stops of ISO for a similar quality of image would be a big deal to me. Big gains in ISO performance is the future since that's one aspect of all these cameras that has really just been lagging behind tremendously. 1 stop at a time it seems, every, what, 10 years? Bleh.
2 - Weather sealing. A pro "action" camera needs real weather sealing, not just sorta-kinda, and should match the weather sealed lenses and TC's that are often coupled with it. I would pay more, knowing I can take a splash and simply need to wash it under clean water and air dry later. Huge peace of mind, I'd pay for. I don't want to submerge it. But I want to know I can kayak with it, and not need a stupid bulky bag or ultra expensive waterproof case. Would love to go to the beach and out in the rain, and not fear it being a brick at the end of the day.
3 - Wifi/MFA. Wifi really is a nice feature. When you have it and then don't have it, you notice it. Being able to quickly peak at your photos to ensure you have something usable before you walk away to the next shoot can save you headaches. It's also nice as a way to quickly show a client, or simply yourself/friends/family a photo before you move on to something. MFA goes without saying, every single dSLR should have this feature. It's ridiculous that many lack it. Obviously the 7D has it, and the 7D2 will absolutely have to have it.
The rest, like the robust AF system, dual pixel AF, higher MegaPixel, etc, are all just gravy.
I'd take a lesser camear that has a crop sensor, if it had those 3 (mainly the first 2) criteria above.
Very best,
