Dedicated hot shoe mount (on e-bay, I'm sure there are others) for GoPro:

I saw that, and have to admit that I laughed a little at the seller's ingenuity.

I have a half dozen cold shoe adapters like that, and a pair of tripod adapters. I thought it showed some chutzpah to slap them together, double the price and sell them to people.

Ok, back on topic. I tried that first, then I tried a few variations before I decided to mount the camera further forwards so it didn't catch the lens hood on my longest lens.

If I had bothered to search google, I would have seen a hundred or more folks who have gone through the same process I did, and some innovative solutions including 3D printed hotshoe mounts.

In my hubris, I thought I was doing something new... :p ;)

Anyway, I grabbed a screen shot of the angle difference between my Tamron 17-50 2.8 and the GoPro (With it mounted as I showed earlier)

I have done something "similar" for shooting RC Model aircraft. It is advantageous to have the ability to get video at the exact angle and time frame as stills. My biggest drawback is the shutter sound being recorded in the video (I use a Sony "Bloggie" for my video) is quite loud! LOL!!

I have two GoPros... I might play with a setup like that some time... one pointing forward, one backwards.

Really good video from a photographer covering a riot in Brazil using this idea.
