Found a group of these at the refuge today - SW Washington state. I'm assuming some sort of piper but the beak looks really odd. This shot is cropped quite a bit as they were rather camera shy.

Looks like a Wilson's snipe, I think.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

It sure does, at least according to iBirds. Thank you. I've never seen one before.

They are pretty skittish and generally hang out among the reeds at the water's edge, at least the ones I have seen. Great shot, finding one out in the open like that.

Thanks, they are skittish. These both are severe crops from my 7D, shot with a 70-200/2.8 w/2x extender at the full 400mm. And they aren't a big bird either.

Yep, and they are so well camouflaged too! Sometimes it is really hard to pick them out from the BG.

It was the Snipe that got me into bird photography. The bird I had was on my lawn in November with no water nearby. I was told he was a Common or Wilson's Snipe. Here is the link to one of my Flickr shots...http://flic.kr/p/dwd7Ev (external link)

I love the profile shot on these birds. That bill is amazing.

Here is a Wilson's snipe that I photographed last summer at the pond across from my home:

^ you may want to post a link instead of hotlinking to your image, considering that this is Dave's thread.

OK. Didn't know the etiquette here.
