hi my son is into kickboxing and am looking for a not too expensive lens to be able to use at his tournaments. i used a 50mm lens on my canon 1100d on his last one. with help from members on here i captured some good shots ( for me ). i need a lens to be able to zoom in with in case i cant get close to the fights. hopefully something that wont break the bank as i'm not a serious photographer and am new to this. sorry for the long winded explanation :D

many thanks

If you still want to be able to shoot at 1.8, then a zoom is not going to be able to offer that (with the exception of the sigma 18-35). With a zoom, you will be looking at something more along the lines of f/2.8 which is just over a stop slower. So take whatever ISO you were shooting at and imaging shooting at double that. If that is ok with you, then you will be fine, if not however, then you may want to look into another prime. Something like the 85mm 1.8 would be good. But, you will be changing lenses every time you want to "zoom".

As mentioned above most zoom lenses are only f2.8 wide open. So you need good light, and your camera isnt the best at high ISO. the 85 1.8 is good, the 100 f2 is also. If your budget were higher the 135L is sterling.

Heya,

What's your actual budget?

I would think a 70-200 variation lens would be a good start.
But depending on budget, maybe one of the 55-250's or a 7X-300 lens would work.

Primes will work better in low light with wider max apertures, but you won't have the zoom option. You will have to change lenses if you need a different field of view, assuming you can't move from where you're at. If 50mm was fine, and you just want some more length for when you're further away, then you could look at an 85mm prime which would be cheap and have fast aperture, or maybe even a 100mm prime with again, wider aperture (F2 and F2.8). After that it gets costly to have a prime. Then again, you could look at something like a mid-range zoom with F2.8 to F4, with IS or equivalent.

You will need to shoot at higher ISO values to keep shutter speed high enough to freeze the action and not get a blurry mess. But you get a lot of noise with this obviously. That's a limitation of the camera.

Zoom options without knowing your budget:

Canon EF-S 55-250 IS STM
Canon EF-S 18-200 IS
Tamron 70-300 VC

Canon EF 24-105 F4L
Canon EF-S 18-135 IS STM

Tamron 28-75 F2.8

Ideal: Tamron 70-200 F2.8 (external link)

Very best,

So his 50 is too short, and you suggest a 17-50?

Heya,

You better set a budget. Otherwise, a $2.5k lens will get recommended.

I would really look to the Tamron 70-200 F2.8 VC at the $1.5k mark. Try to get it used or with a rebate maybe. Ultimately those focal lengths, that aperture, etc, will be super useful in the long run and cover tons of things in one single very good lens.

Very best,

or the 24-105L. Yeah you're using a crop body, but regardless, it's a good lens

A cheaper alternative would be to pickup an 85/1.8, 100/2 or 135/2.8 SF (last one can only be bought used) to use in conjunction with your 50/1.8.
