Hello
I've owned the Sigma 50/1.4 for 1 week now and some days ago I bought the 6D and got the 40/2.8 STM with the camera. I fell in love with this pancake and I can use it wide-open. The Sigma is brilliant but I need to use f2.0 to get it sharp enough. Now when I got a 6D I can use higher ISO for the pancake. I use the pancake more.

To the problem...
I can return the Sigma tomorrow and get the money back next week and tomorrow is the only day I can send it.

What do you think? Should I return the Sigma and buy a normal zoom to the 6D instead? There's not much between 40-50mm

If you dont value the extra stop of light and the ability to get shallower DOF (and bokeh quality) return it. They are so close in focal length you probably dont need both.

Heya,

Return the Sigma. Simple as that. You made it obvious it's a lens you have zero interest in and you stop it down making the F1.4 pretty much not relavent.

Save up and get a quality zoom for your 6D.

Very best,

But f/2.0 is still faster then f/2.8.

But, the Sigma's price will most likely come down (for used), so you can always grab it again if you decide you need/miss the extra stop

But, the price of the 40mm is so cheap, new or used, probably wouldn't cost you anything to dump it and buy it again later.

Great help, wasn't I? :D

I already own the pancake :) so I don't need to sell it :). I think I will return the Sigma tomorrow, yeah the bokeh is nice but is it worth to use it sometimes?

This is something only you can decide for yourself, and I think you have.

I think that I've more use of a normal zoom like 17-40 that I can use as a wide-angle too

Heya,

Just to maybe drive a point home:

Take your 50 at F2 and take your 90 at F2.8 (or even your 120-300). Shoot the same subject some where, with nothing behind it (like outside) for a big distance. Do it at different distances for each lens. Compare the bokeh. Then see if you think you really need the 50mm anymore, since you already have the 40 that is close in length. Aperture is not the only way to get a thin depth of field and generate bokeh. Unless you're referring to the quality of the bokeh specifically of the Sigma 50, which is completely subjective and up to you.

Very best,

Personally, unless there is something wrong with the Sigma, how can you return it. If you wanted to just try out the lens to see if you would like it, you should have rented it. Returning the lens because you don't need it anymore is abuse of the liberal return policies we have. Just feel it's not an ethically right thing to do.

Costco used to have a great return policy and people abused it, even bragged about it on forums. Guess what, Costco greatly tightened up their policies.

I guess you need to make this decision yourself. In the end, everyone shares in the cost of these returns as the dealers sell them at a discounted price, which usually ends up with higher prices overall for everyone to cover these returns.

"Dump" the 50 and get a Canon 85 1.8. Having a 40mm and a 50mm is pointless IMO. They're too close in focal length. How you "dump" it though is up to you; return or resell.

I love my 40mm stm, it is my go to street lens at f2.8 it is perfect for environmental portraits.
With that said, I have been using my 50 1.4 more and more to justify selling it to buy a 50L.
They are similar focal lengths; but serve 2 very different goals in my photography.
My 40mm can't do f1.2 or 1.4 and my 40mm is small and discreet, as well as sharp wide open.
Keep the 40mm stm and use it more and more, even in low-light with your 6D.

I've tested the 50/1.4 vs the 40/2.8 and the 40/2.8 is even sharper wide-open than the Sigma is on 2.8 so I don't see any sense to hold the 50/1.4 now when I've the 6D. If I got my old camera (APS-C) then it would be another story :)

For this sigma I can get a back-up camera (APS-C) for my tele or a nice normal zoom/ wide-angle to my 6D

Sell the Sigma 50 and the 40 2.8. Get the 35 IS. You are quite welcome.
