Folks, I'm looking for a second flash to go with my 600EX-RT & ST-E3-RT. Whilst I'm not in a massive hurry I'd like to pick one up within about the next 30 days.

I'm interested in the Yongnuo But my concern is that it was mentioned way back in September & here we are some 6 months on with little word on when it's likely to hit the streets. That is unless I've missed any updates...

So my questions are:

1) has anyone heard of anything remotely firm regarding launch?
2) any indications on price?

If not, I'll pick up another 600EX on my trip to the US next month & get it shipped to my office in MD, current pricing comes in at $449 (£270 equivalent in Blighty), this is a mahoosive saving of £200 in comparison to rip-off Britain!

Thanks

Lee

No one knows when the YN will be released. Have you looked in the buy and sell for a used 600. Fred Miranda's buy and sell is pretty good as well.

That was my thought, I've looked on here but not Fred's. I've seen some going on here & enquired but the ones I've seen at ~6 mths to a year old are up (firm) for almost new money which just doesn't work for me. Each to their own of course, but I'm not paying retail for used...

Thanks for your comment - going to trawl the other site ;)

You might be in a bind. There will probably be a lot of 580's for sale.

Rent for the short term or snag them now for $450 new. Tough call. I believe I will obtain another
Canon model because I don't think I want to hold out and it would give me a pair. Then snag a pair of the Yongnuo model when they come out. Pairs because it would bug me...

Yeah, my thoughts exactly on the Canon at that price it's pretty good, especially in comparison to the price I'd need to pay back home...

Buy 3, sale 2 back home to pay for all three... Or not, the whole dodging the VAT thing is slightly illegal :p

Seriously, I don't know what the personal allotment is per trip is to the UK, but beware you can get into some legal trouble at some point.

You know what, I don't know the limit either...I'll buy it in the US, use it whilst there & ditch the box...I won't be needing it...that way all should be fine...I hope...lol

Basically, GBP £390 for stuff you import in your accompanied baggage - but that's the value of ALL the stuff you bring home with you including gifts and souvenirs. Don't be tempted to post stuff to yourself as, in my experience, everything from USA to UK is scrutinised and charged. Everything.

Even if you declare it as "Gift" with no value, you get charged VAT/Import Duty on the carriage and insurance plus the £15 'admin fee' for the pleasure  of paying the taxes. Takes all the joy out of the purchase :(

Other odd bits over the decades, simply to get the job done - not merely to polish and brag about cos I'm too mean to buy the polish!

Thanks for the post, I was curious what it was, but not curious enough to do the research my self (read: to lazy ;)).

Not sure about UK but in US when I travel outside the country and carry significant camera equipment, I take along a listing of all the gear, with serial numbers, to show the customer guys, if they ask on return.

Everything photographic is manufactured outside the US. Too many people have tried to bring stuff back without declaring it to make it easy.

Based on my experience going through Heathrow over the years, I'd expect that UK customs won't be fooled by bright shiny new speedlite, even if its in a camera bag without a box. :-)

Likewise, David. Once upon a time, we used to carry the original invoices to prove UK-importation. Now it's easier on a memory stick but I still have a full listing of absolutely everything down to synch cables.

There ain't a trick in the book that Customs guys haven't seen a thousand times before so anything which does get through is "on the nod" or that all-too-frequent British trait of "can't be bothered". The tough bit is not only can they impound the item in question, but they can also deprive us of all the equipment and 'duty free' allowances are also forfeit. The onus is then on us to prove that it's all 'officially' imported. The concept of Guilty until proved innocent doesn't sit very comfortably with me.

Heathrow? I'd rather not travel than make any plans involving that place. Amusing that Simon described it as being known locally as Thiefrow - here's me thinking that was a truly global sobriquet. Definitely not the Jewel in the Crown of this impoverished little country!
