Sekonic L-358 is a very good meter. You should be able to pick up a good used one on POTN for around $200.

You probably want a flash/incident combo. If you want brand new this might be for you. A little over your budget but I have never met one I set before.

There are other brands out there that other people have posted before and will chime in.

Sekonic L358 should be available used within your budget. The 308 linked to above would be my second choice.

+1 on the L-358. Excellent meter and easy to use.

Minolta Autometer IVf or Vf, Kenko KFM1100, all comparable to Sekonic L358...today's photographer seems to only know the Sekonic name, but Minolta was dominant until they exited the meter market, just before the camera business was sold to Sony. Kenko bought the rights to the Minolta Autometer Vf and Flashmeter VIf and started to see both under the Kenko name <10 years ago.

Two new meters of note fall in the US $200 range: the Gossen Digisix (external link) and the Shepherd Polaris SPD 100. (external link) Both are useful for those who must spend their own money.

You are right. I know nothing about other meters. While Sekonic does make a good product I think you pay a bit for the name. The reason I leaned towards Sekonic is used to own an old spot meter back in the late 80's when I dabbled in the zone system. I was very happy with it so I just went with the company. I think it was a Digi-Spot but it has been so long.

The reason I went with Sekonic over Gossen is the former's integration with the PocketWizard system.

What about support?

I've really never heard of anything having an issue with a light meter, but I know that Sekonic is still around. If I had a problem with my L-358, I feel pretty good that I'd get at least a minimum level of support. I'm not so sure about Minolta.

Be nice if Sekonic did that with Canon RT one day.

+1. Unfortunately, I doubt they'd go back and provide a module for the L-358... if they ever choose to do it, which I also doubt.

Being discontinued does not help. Even a 3rd party manufacturer would not touch that if they start making modules one day.

You never know about Sekonic in general. PW is hurting. I called Sekonic about a year ago and they had no plans to do this but things change.
