There are no catch lights in her irises or pupils, which makes her eyes appear dull and unlively. Joe

Mar 16, 2014 16:20 | #3 Agree with the above that her right side is too hot. Her eyes are cut too far left. You should always leave whites visible on both sides of the iris. Lighting on the back of her hair is good. Not a fan of hands under the chin, but that is a personal preference. focus on her eyes is a bit soft. 5D MKIII/6D/70D/T2i(gave it away to a needy photog)/100-400mm L MKII IS/70-200mm L IS II 2.8/70-200mm L 2.8/24-105L/SP 90mm 2.8 Di VC/18-135mm 3.5-5.6 IS STM/18-55mm 3.5-5.6 IS II/75-300mm III 4-5.6/50mm 1.8/600 EX-RT/430EX II/Westcott Pro Plus 300Wx3/Westcott Softboxes 24x32/Westcott Umbrellas/Pocketwizard Plus III Triggers....

In this case it appears your main light was too low (resulting in the catchlight at the bottom of her irises) and too much to the left (observe the shadow under her nose; it should be directly under her nose to minimize the shadow). Your modelling light will show you where the shadow falls.

Thanks you all for responding. I would like to know if these issues could be or should be address in post ie adding catchlights, correcting exposure on rightside etc. 1D Mklll, Gripped 5Dc, Gripped 40d, Nifty 50, Canon 85 f/1.8 ,Canon 17-40 L , Canon 24-105 F/4 IS L, Sigma 70-200 2.8 OS , http://500px.com/mikexlt

yes the lights were metered , exposure 1/125. f8, iso 100. the catchlights are from a gold reflector held to open up the dark side of her face 1D Mklll, Gripped 5Dc, Gripped 40d, Nifty 50, Canon 85 f/1.8 ,Canon 17-40 L , Canon 24-105 F/4 IS L, Sigma 70-200 2.8 OS , http://500px.com/mikexlt

To add my two cents, someone gave me the advice to use a light behind me (me-the-photographer) to shrink the model's pupils and get more iris color to show, I think that could have helped make her eyes prettier here. Especially since she's got a really pretty eye color. Just make sure it doesn't register as ambient based on your camera settings. Colleen
