Not if you are outside
Sorry can't help you because I've never been on one. I think others have mentioned something about bouncing on a ship.

The jump from AAAs to AAs makes a significant difference in power and recharge times. There's no comparing these small flashes to the larger swivel ones, but they are great for the size. I use a 270EX II for personal travel as a fill flash more than trying to light a whole room. SOSKIphoto

Thanks for the info -- that is helpful. I would mostly be using this for fill flash, too. I do not expect the flash to be able to light up a large room on a ship.

Mar 24, 2014 12:55 | #21 Just as a follow-up, with Canon having a 20% off sale on refurbished equipment, I decided to go ahead and give the 270EXII a try. The cost with shipping and sales tax was $120. If I end up not liking the flash, I can probably sell it for almost that price after our trip.

It's so small and inexpensive, even if you decide you want use it, you will probably end up hanging on to it just in case. I think I bought mine used for $100. SOSKIphoto

Mar 31, 2014 20:22 | #23 As a final follow-up, the 270EX II flash arrived last week. It is definitely a lot more compact than my 430EX II, so from a size standpoint it will meet my travel needs. From the few test shots I have taken, the flash seems to generate a decent amount of light - certainly enough to use as fill flash at a relatively short distance, which is my main intention. While I wouldn't want to use this as my primary flash all the time, I think it will be sufficient for our trip, as well as other occasions when we travel.

It fits perfectly in your wife's purse or a jacket pocket. As I've mentioned before, I use mine for personal events or travel where I need just a pop of fill. For paid assignments, I use the 600's to swivel and bounce. Enjoy! SOSKIphoto

Also, I was testing it on my 5D3 along with the 40mm f/2.8 pancake, and the combination makes for a nice, compact solution. It should work well when we are walking around the cruise ship.
