More for curiosity than anything else. What's the advantage of power packs over monobloc heads? For example Elinchrom Digital 2400 pack with heads against say some Eli Style RX heads. I realise the packs are more expensive but why and when would you use them over the heads?

If anyone has any links that explains this that'd be appreciated.

It's easier to adjust power on a power pack than a monoblock when boomed.

With this being brought up, are there any good power packs that are a bit smaller that can be hooked to a belt? I'm looking for something rechargeable but having a hard time.

Not meant to thread jack, just looking to build off the subject.

Here is a few takes on this subject:

I've got both monoblocks and pack/heads(Elinchrom portable battery pack heads). It's really nice to be able to have controls down low, but it comes at quit and expense. Also, I think you'll find more options with pack/heads of want lots of power.

A lot of the pack and head systems have pretty lightweight heads which is nice when they're on a boom. Some can be pretty heavy too though. My studio-mate's Speedotrons are heavier than my Einsteins.

As windpig said in both of his previous posts too, power adjustments are a lot easier on a pack and head system (at least until I got a Cyber Commander) and if you need more powerful lights you'll have more choices with a pack and head strobe.

Each of Your studio mate's speedotron heads is as powerful as 4 of your Einstein's .

Power adjustment on Eli's and Profoto is controlled from the controller in the hotshoe of the camera so that's a nonissue.

Mark, when is the last time you tried turning the modeling light on your Eli Ranger pack, if you ever did when you owned it? It sucks. Don't know about the hoity-toity Profoto stuff though.:D

The modeling light is a breeze with the remote on the profoto. Can't remember on the Quadra.

But as Bruce Lee said, you have to be like water. When you pour it into the glass it takes it's shape. It becomes the glass. I become the water. I am one with the water. Get it?

Using the wifi module and iOS app with the Elinchrom is even more convenient and indicates what the light is actually set to.

Thanks folks, when I did a search here I searched for the wrong words. Oh well, question is answered in any case.

The Gossen Digisky meter does all this and more with the 2nd generate Quadra and the Ranger RX. It's pretty cool.
