Surfing photographer icon Aaron Chang had his personal vehicle broken into this past Thursday night in Encinitas, in which the thieves used some type of pry bar to gain access into his vehicle and got away with a nice cache of expensive photo equip. The items are listed here in this post from his FB page:

"I felt like I got punched in the gut yesterday when I realized that my best camera lenses got stolen out of my car on Thursday night-- the Canon 600, the Macro, the 300, 5D Marc 3, the Fish Eye and Tripod. A 48" piece of your choice to anyone who can help me find them -- and to the thief, you reap what you sow, so good luck with yourself!" - Aaron

Here are Aaron's Gallery phone numbers:
Solana Beach Gallery (858) 345-1880
San Diego Gallery (619) 567-8088

Replacing my Canon 7D, Tokina 12-24mm, Canon 17-55mm, Sigma 30mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.4, and 150-500mm with a Panasonic Lumix FZ1000. I still have the 17-55 and the 30 available for sale.

Not for nothing, and I don't even know what that means when my wife says it, but who the hell would leave thousands of dollars worth of gear in their car? I mean, really. Yeah, I feel badly for him, but it was a dumb move.

I go shooting at the Bronx Botanical Gardens and Bronx Zoo with my buddy Kevan from this forum regularly. When we then go a mile away to Arthur Avenue, a famous Italian enclave of amazing food, we never, ever leave our backpacks in the car, and we don't own a 600.

Umm...Mark? When I was down in Easton 2 weeks ago, I left everything in my car in a Target's shopping center, while I was out touring houses with the real estate agent. Yep, I was in a constant worry and was lucky no one f'd with my car.

Just sayin'

This wasn't his first rodeo. The guy is a legend among surf photographers and has three personal galleries in upscale areas.

My wife and I were on vacation once and I had my whole kit with me (total value of way less than a single one of his stolen lenses). At two different places that night, I walked out and left my backpack at the table. Someone like me probably just shouldn't own expensive equipment. : )

In which case I'm certain he has insurance.

As to leaving backpack in restaurant, I always keep the strap to my pack wrapped around my leg so that can't happen.

And if you're leaving yours, perhaps you're having a bit too much to drink. ;-)a ;-)a
