Does anyone have any experience with either the ASII or LR clamp on the BH-40 with this tripod? I prefer the larger ASII clamp, but I need some input on if there are any issues with the legs closing over the BH-40 with either clamp.

This is due to the "hump" at the back of the head with the knobs. If you want a head that allows the legs to close completely, go for an Acratech GP-S or a Markins Q3T -Tom

Mar 19, 2014 07:01 | #3 If you want the the legs to fold back over the head and remain parallel to the center column you need a ballhead that has a max outside diameter of <=50mm, and that includes the base and the ball housing. The Markins Q3T and the smaller Photo Clam ballheads meet this criterion. The OD of the BH-40 base is 53mm and as Tom points out it's asymmetrical. The smallest Acratech also has a 53mm base. ~Peter
