I don't know if anyone important an Canon ever reads this forum but here's a thought that occurred to me today that I thought might be fun to throw out.

My old FD mount Sigma 400mm had an integrated lens shade that just slid out into position when you wanted to use it. It was a round shade, but I wondered if anyone had ever made one of the tulip type shades that is integrated and slides into position. Or maybe slides and, with a 1/4 turn, locks into place. Seems like it might be a useful feature to put in a lens. Just a thought. Tell me what you think. And, if you're from Canon, pass it on.

some of their lenses do have a built in hood. The 300/4L for example.

Yeah, that's the same kind my old Sigma had. I'm wondering if anyone has ever made a lens with an integrated tulip type shade.

Most built-in hoods are not long enough.

Built in hoods rotate to lock and unlock in place. That would be a problem with a tulip hood on shorter focal lengths, since it has to be precisely positioned to avoid vignetting issues.

A bayonet mount is much more practical for a tulip hood. And it reverses for storage anyway, so can save space the same way a built in hood can.

Canon's non Ls don't come with a hood and lots of places don't stock them. It would be nice if they did. I wonder if a built in would make a little smaller package in your bag than a lens with a reversed hood attached. It does seem that a integrated tulip shade could slide forward and then precisely bayonet into place with a 1/4 turn. I don't think I've ever seen one like that. That's really what I was thinking about.

Seems to me the best shade is a free hand or a flag but those are not always the most practical solutions. This was all just tossing around a few thoughts on my part. Nothing very serious. Thanks everyone for joining in.

Not Canon, but the Pentax 15mm Limited comes with an integrated petal hood. Just slides in and out, no locking, it's a small lens and hood though.
