I use a tokina 11-16 on my 7d and I love it, Its the perfect ultra wide angle lens for me, but I know it doesn't work on FF cameras like the 5 D3, does the 17-40 compare? or what other lenses compare to the 11-16? They also need to be around the same price range

Heya,

16-35 F2.8L - Pricey

Price range? Another Tokina! The 16-28 F2.8 PRO (external link). It's a fantastic lens. Same great build and sharpness and lovely fast aperture.

Otherwise, manual lenses like the Rokinon/Samyang 14mm F2.8.

There's also something to say about Sigma's 20mm F1.8 lens.

Very best,

17-40L is nice for FF and you could find a nice one used under $650. That said it is an f/4 lens, and if you want something that will better match the sharpness that the Tokina has, you should probably be looking for the 16-35L which is f/2.8, or the Tokina 17-35mm f/4 that was released not too long ago and only goes for $499 brand new.

On the other hand the Tokina 16-28mm f/2.8 is an awesome lens as well, but you have to consider the front element issue and filters that you may have invested in currently.

You can use the Tokina at 16mm on the 5D. You could go wider, but vignetting will quickly become an issue.

, Yeah I find my self shooting at 11, most of the time so I might as well just replace the lens

Yeah the 16-35 would be ideal, but the price is way too high for me, is the 16-28 and ultra wide?

16 on the 5DIII would be a touch wider than 11 on your 7D. ;)

Heya,

You do understand that focal length determines width of angle of view, right?

On a full frame, anything 20mm and lower, really, is very wide. 10mm to 16mm is ultrawide. Any wider and you really get into heavy distortion and fish eye type effects (like at 8mm). 14~16mm is the typical "widest" you find before distortion becomes heavy. 16~20 is a nice width where distortion is more minimal, present, but minimal, and still very wide.

The Tokina 16-28 is an ultrawide. The focal length tells you that.

Very best,

If you like shooting at 11mm with the Tokina on a crop camera, this is pretty much the same view as 16mm on a full frame. I shoot my Tokina at 16mm on my 6D with no issues at all.

I use the 11-16 on my film body down to about 14mm without noticeable vignetting. That's about 9mm FF equivalent...
