Look at most lens reviews, Photozone.de for one. MTF chart given showing us all the best apertuere of that lens.

What do you mean by sweet spot?

I love shooting some of mine stopped down just as much as I do wide open.

Your right Alex, as it's relative to what you like to shoot, so in your case, you could elaborate on stopped down and wide open.

canon 18 -55 - none have a bad copy

sigma 18 - 200 - f7.1 but very acceptable wide open at all focal lengths

sigma 50mm - f2.2 for low light and in normal lighting conditions f4

I find the sweetspot of each lens depends entirely on the subject I'm shooting... f/1.4 sometimes great, sometimes f/11 is better ;)

My Friend / Business Partner who I shoot with calls me F8 and I call him Mr Wide open he believes that if he buys a f 2.8 Lens he can shoot at f2.8 without any problems ( Not totally he stops down when needed ) and I like to stop down to get the sharpest shot that I can get and from day one with my XT and Tammy 70-300mm f8 was really sweet so I have this affliction to f8 .
