I'm interested in a full frame DSLR.

I have looked carefully at different pictures taken by the 5D3 and 6D. I think they're both excellent cameras.

But.....

Now I know it's a bit like comparing apples and oranges....but it just me or does the 5D3...with equal lenses...say a 24-105 L or 17-40 L....take pictures that have better resolution, colour rendition, etc. ?

I don't think so. If you can live without the amazing 5D3 AF system, the 6D will give you the same result

the 6D has a slight edge.... very slight better IQ but without pixel peeping you wouldn't notice.

Seriously both are capable cameras. as far as the output the image... SAME.

It comes down IMHO to ergonomics, weight, COST, and auto focus capabilities.

Heya,

If you need a very robust autofocus system and you're ok with paying an extra $1500 for that alone, then the 5D3 is your camera.

If you want the slightly better sensor, slightly better IQ, and slightly better ISO performance and you are good with standard autofocus ability (which is quite good, this is not a negative) then the 6D really is a great camera to go with for it's cost.

Very best,

It is really about what you need/want from a camera and what the $$ value is to you.

Here is a comparison of many features/benefits of each. It gives a slight edge to the 6d, but again, it depends of what features are most beneficial to YOU.

5Dmark III has almost no weakness except higher price, but IQ is almost the same...

-robust AF system for fast motion oriented shots, more keepers and better tracking.
-much better build quality and better ergonomics.
-6FPS

get the 5D3 for robust AF, get the 6D for price, size, gps, wifi.

if money isnt an issue, 5D3.

if it cuts into your lens budget, or sports isnt your style, then 6D + savings.

as for which camera is better? 5D3 for sports and landscapes. There are some features that are really useful, even for landscape shooters.

Having used both, 5D3 for AF and 6d for slightly better IQ and high ISO. Either one is an excellent buy.

Build quality is pretty much identical, so not sure what you're talking about there. Ergonomics is subjective, I prefer the 6D's one handed controls, it means I never have to take my hand off the lens.

The 6D grip is actually the tiniest bit larger (deeper) than the 5D's, you're miss-informed.

To be honest you will never notice if you shoot both and look at the images later unless you look at the EXIF data. What sets them apart is the AF system, control layout, weight and build quality. What I like about both is that they're pretty much consistent with color and exposure thatI can applymy 5D3 custom lightroom presets on 6D photos and vice versa.

I say just rent/borrow both and see which one feels right to you.

6D = slightly better sensor

5D III = better AF system

I recommend a 6D unless you shoot subjects that are particularly challenging to AF systems.

_______________

Continuing on, the following are a few things that interest me - they may or not be relevant to your needs (everyone is different!):

The 5D III has 7 exposure brackets while the 6D only has 3 (6D users correct me if I'm wrong :) ). I use all 7 brackets for HDR shooting. It is not difficult to produce more than 3 with the 6D - just not quite as "automated."

The 5D III electronic level (very useful for landscapes and architecture) covers all axes - the 6D level is less complete (from what other 6D users have told me).

The 6D sensor has cleaner shadow detail, while the 5D III can reveal ugly pattern noise in the shadows. This only relevant when needing to push shadows hard in some landscape and architectural scenes that max-out the camera's dynamic range.

pretty much identical? 5dmkIII has full magnesium body and it´s heavier, 6D has : "The construction of the body integrates an aluminum alloy and polycarbonate chassis within a magnesium and polycarbonate shell for durability while still maintaining a lightweight profile"

clearly 6D is all about lightweight same as 70D vs 7D...

Plus I am not sure why you ever have to take your hands off the lens with the 5D3? Whatever button you use over there shot by shot, most likely can be programmed to the Set button, I would think?
