So my oldest daughter is in pre-school and it seems like every few months they are bringing in some photographer to do cheesy school photos. As much as I really don't want to buy packages with a million wallet sized photos, it seems like one of those things that you just have to do. So early this week my daughter brings home these photos:

Pretty standard from a school portrait point-of-view. I can't believe they are still using laser backgrounds as an option. Anyway, my wife posted my daughter's photo on Facebook and mentioned she was jealous because she didn't get a cool laser background when I took her headshot last week. So last night I surprised her with this:

Any C&C would be appreciated on the actual portrait (aside from the cheesy background). This was one of my first attempts using "clamshell lighting". I had a large softbox above with a reflector on her lap. I also had a speedlight behind on a stand pointing back at the camera acting as a hair light. It might be difficult to tell because of the photoshopped-in lasers.

Seriously, lasers?!?!? Wow. Nice try on your copy, I noticed a few minor things. Your hair light seems to be a bit strong or you have some bad masking around the top of her head. You need to clone out all the flyaway hairs as the rim light makes them stand out. I'd also like to see her chin lifted a bit. If you want her face down like that. let her bend more at the waist and not so much at the neck as you get a sense of having her chin tucked.

The laser thing is pretty funny. I agree about the hairlight situation, it is really distracting to me.
