I have been asked to do school portraits for a very small private school. I have the equipment I need so I'm covered there. My question is how do you match up the photos with the students? They only have 44 students, so I could just write down the names in the order that we photograph them, but I thought there might be a better way to do it..

Are you using some kind of order form for prints? You could mark on each order for the image sequence (file number) from the shoot. That way if the order forms get out of order you still know which kid is which.

I use to work for a professional portrait company that do 6K high school kids a year.

For that kind of application...they were using Darkroom.

for such a small school, I'd probably just have each kid hold a card with their name for one photo. Or ask if the school has a list of students for each class somehow sorted by alphabet and maybe assigned a number, go down that list. Might get complicated if some kid(s) are out that day, but probably easy to manage.

We take pre-printed order forms (packs available, how to order etc etc) and shoot direct to Photoshop. A pre-programmed action then prints a small proof and IMG_ number onto the order form. Within 10 seconds of the photo being taken the student has their proofs.

And judging by your website(s) you seem to be very successful at what you do ;) can I be as bold to ask whether this photoshop action is freely available or can you give me any indication as to how I can obtain it? I only ask as I am trying to break into dance school photography and this action sounds ideal for handing out to waiting parents.
TIA
Paul

For 44 kids, the easy way is to have each kid write their name on a paper. Do one shot with them holding it up and another with it in their lap where it won't be in the photo.

And you'll get one kid who writes "Seymour Butts."

Adhesive name tags written and applied by the teacher? Take photo. Rip Off. Take photo. First photo for ID, second photo for parents.

Why wouldn't that work? Cheap & simple for a small class size.

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)
