When I first got my camera last year, I started leaving for work a lot earlier. I would stop by this pond behind a historic mill. There is a large and diverse population of birds that feed there including the occasional Osprey.
This particular morning I almost didn't go as the light was less then flattering but at the last minute I went. I spied what I thought was a plastic bag caught in a tree limb moving with the wind. Not having binoculars with me I put on my 55-250 kit lens and zoomed in to take a shot and then zoomed in on the image viewer. I still wasn't sure what I was seeing until this Egret flew over and perched by this poor creature struggling to get free. I whipped out my smart phone and googled wildlife rescue and found one nearby. I called and reported the situation. I thought it was an Osprey but I was wrong. It was a Black Night Heron that was tangled in some kite string. They rescued the bird, stitched him up where he was cut by the string and nursed him back to health (he was underweight when they rescued him) and released him back to the wild near where he was rescued. The string was removed at the time of rescue. If I didn't go he probably would have died. Please take the time to look up a wildlife rescue organization in advance in case you come upon a situation like this. Happy Birding!

This shot is of him in the rehabilitation center before being released. I did not take this picture. Much credit and appreciation to The Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. They are a wonderful group of people doing an amazing job.
