Lately I have been thinking how many great shots I miss because I don't have my gear. I would like to have a camera I could take everywhere that produces some decent files. I have read all the threads (viewed the photo threads) and I am down to these two cameras. I was at Fry's today and was able to play a little with a G1X and a Sony RX100 II. I prefer the controls and menu access of the G1X but that Sony keeps calling my name. I would be shooting landscape and walk around street photography. I know either would serve my purpose but any input you may have from your experience will be appreciated!

I will tell you I own the g1x, and also the rx100 mki.....I love the feel and handling on the g1x, and iq, but because of the compactness of the rx100, I take it with me most of the time. Iq is very close, and if I'm not taking my dslr, I throw the rx100 in my pocket, and I'm a 3 decade canon guy.

I would suggest waiting until the G1X Mark II is out before rashly laying down cash you might regret at a later date.

I've never seen the G1X and RX100 (MkI or MkII versions) as direct competitors.

I've had the G1x now forv 2 years now and use the mates RX100, I,m always happy to return the RX100 far to small with fiddly controls, also as already mentioned in earlier threads the Canon menu's more user friendly.

What am I missing here. Both are minimum zoom point and shoot style cameras with similar stats? Seem pretty close in my research?

I do love the G1X's menus and controls. Seems more fun to operate. Am I over critical by comparing 10.8 DR to 12.2? DR is less than my 40D on paper.

Yes good to know. I was thinking I could possibly keep the G1X in a case attached to my belt? As many have said; the best camera to have is the one you have with you!

I owned and then sold an RX-100. Beautiful IQ, small size. My biggest concern, and why I ended up selling it, might not apply to most people (I'm a pretty abnormal dude). I didn't want to have to baby a compact camera, and I kinda did that with the RX-100 because of it's relatively high price, and the knowledge that damaging the lens might make an entire $549 camera useless. So I was looking for cases, reluctant to put it in my pocket, etc when the entire point of this camera is probably to carry it anywhere in your pocket.

So these days I use my wife's Canon S110 as a go anywhere camera. It's as versatile as the RX100 thanks to the relatively fast lens at the wide end, the zoom range, RAW shooting, etc. I prefer Canon's menu system (although the RX100's is actually pretty darn good). Plus at the S110's price point I have no problem using it like a pocketable compact. I carry it in my pocket, don't really worry too much about dropping it, getting it dusty, etc. I just don't think about it too much, but it's there if I need it, which I like. The RX-100's IQ is better, but there have been few situations when I've out and about and get a shot where I'm thinking "darn, I wish this camera had better IQ". I just am glad to have gotten the shot.

The difference for me is a camera that I can handle comfortably, access the controls comfortably, has enough heft to feel solid without being too heavy, versus one that I have to operate with fingertips. The RX100 is simply too small for me.

Thanks I will take a look at the s110

Absolutely, if you enjoy using a camera you'll most likely use it more. I know a few people who love the size of the RX100 models and find the two G1Xes too big so you'll need to determine which size of camera suits you best.

I'm in the same boat as you... G1Xii or RX100?... I own the S110, but I get frustrated with the tiny size.

I'm leaning toward the G1Xii for a few reasons:

1. size: small enough to carry in a jacket, big enough that it's comfortable to hold and control

2. filters: yes, I would like to throw on a polarizer, ND, GND occasionally, G1X allows this

3. bokeh: yes, I know, bokeh on a compact is a joke, but canon's APS-C equiv aperture at 120mm is <F/5.6, sony's is 100mm and >f/8... so I've got a better shot at decent portrait bokeh with canon

4. CHDK: a whole bag of free extras

5. Other stuff: It does all the other stuff I want - touch focus/shoot on a tilt screen, accepts lens filter, remote shooting w/ phone, hot shoe, Wi-Fi/NFC, reasonably fast focus and FPS

Ok, so I'm not a big canon fan, I frankly have wanted to jump to sony for some time, but I own a Canon 60D (and like it well enough)... and the G1x uses same flash and remote, so I have some nice compatibility synergies when using this as a backup.
