I have heard both good and bad things about the ease of use for MF on this lens. Hope to hear from those who actually use this lens and MF.

I use it on a 6D, primarily. I don't do much MF, but this lens easy to work with. The MF ring is large enough to find easily, way forward, well damped, smooth as silk and MFD to infinity is about 120 degrees. I upgraded from the old 35 2, which possessed none of these qualities. $549 well-spent, IMO.

Heya,

It has full time manual focus, with autofocus. And it's so easy to focus, so smooth, and so fast.

I manually focused this with the 35 F2 IS:

This is a single 4 minute exposure. So focus had to be absolutely perfect. It was easy.

Agree with the above. I love how smooth and damp. Used it for coming for a school project and it makes it easy.

There is a long pull between the shorter focusing distances but shortens toward infinity.

Very best,

Wow great and clean image. Did you use a following rig (just googled i meant follow focus) to prevent star trails?

Heya,

Yes, a tracker that turns at the speed of the Earth relative to the stars. That's how I do 4+ minute single exposures without trails.

But to do that, you have to have manual focus to infinity to be absolutely spot on or it will show up in a big way.

MF feels much like my 85 F/1.8 to me. Not as nice as my 400 or my Sigma macro (which is understandable), but good enough for the occasional MF use. It's MFD is pretty impressive so MF will have its uses.

AF has been so good that I never tried MF. I use MF with my macro lenses.

That's always an issue with any modern Canon lens.. (the rare exception being the 40/2.8). ;)

Heya,

$550ish new these days. It's initial price was astronomical (closer to $800). I think the price is fair actually. When you put it up against a 35L, and realize, it's as good, if not a little better, and just lacks the red ring and has a single stop of aperture difference, the price is truly appreciable.

Very best,
