Hi all,

I was wondering if any one else was having this exact issue. I did a quick POTN search and nothing came up, so hopefully I'm not duplicating threads.

Anyways, I haven't used LR 5.3 since December, and between then and now I reformatted my computer and reinstalled my basic program set. I haven't added any new programs, and if anything my current set-up should be the same as it was in December minus extra temp file bloat and a few extraneous programs.

Fast forward to today (after taking some new photos). I open up LR, and try to import but the program hangs and eventually crashes. The exact issue can be seen in this youtube video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wg0uQvVoZYw (external link)

Thinking it was a bad installation, I proceeded to remove LR, and reinstall it. No dice.

Thinking it was a driver/program issue, I booted into Safe Mode and tried to import. No dice.

I'm all out of ideas. It looks like the issue is fairly common (judging by the number of new help threads on the Adobe Community Forums. Does anyone have any experience, or better yet, any fixes for this particular issue?

In case anyone asks, my general computer set-up is below:

  • Windows 7 Pro 64-bit
  • LR 5.3
  • AMD Phenom II X6 1055T
  • 8GB Ram
  • 128GB OCZ Agility 3 SSD
  • 1TB WD Green HD

Thanks in advance!

Do you have any videos? My Lightroom does not allow me to import videos. So when I take them I move them into a separate folder and import images only, otherwise it freezes.

Hope it helps.

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately I don't have any videos in the card. Also, I don't think it'd be related because even when I try to press the Import button with nothing attached, the program continues to freeze :(

My preliminary findings via systematically uninstalling programs one by one on my machine is that Avast Free Antivirus seems to be the cause. Upon uninstalling it, my Import button doesn't cause any hangs or crashes.

I'll keep this thread updated as I come up with more information.

It turns out that I had a microSD card stuck in a reader behind my monitor. The reason I forgot about it is that 1) I never use it (or rather, I thought I didn't) and 2) it's microSD that small little bugger.

So long story short- it was a corrupt sd card hanging things up.

:(

Wow, glad to know you found the problem!

That's a good example of the frustrating fact that things can go wrong and create a big mystery as well as a waste of time, but then, if the stars are in our favor, the fix is there!

hahah totally. It was a really bad day to start with things going wrong late last night. I'm just so happy I caught on before fully committing to a reformat. Not that it's a huge chore as I have images, but still- reinstalling software is not the best use of my time (and it wouldn't have fixed the problem!)

At least my stupidity is on record to help people who may be fortunate enough to follow in my footsteps in the figure ;)

Mine used to hang also, and that was on an up to date Mac.

Since LR4 and now 5, I've never had that problem.

^Any idea what the cause was? Or did you just upgrade and all was well afterwards?

I'm the dummy. I read your post as LR 3 and I was going to say, dude, time to upgrade, you cheap...;-)a

As to the cause, LR just used to be buggy as hell and incredibly slow. Once I upgraded to 32gb RAM, it cruises nicely.

LR2.7 is still the fastest and if I could stay with it, I would. I used it right up to the when the 5 came(for professional work) out and it's still really buggy and still not there with the speed(close though). Convering RAW to DNG was a pita... for the 5DIII since it didn't support it. So many years and it's weird they still haven't figure out how to make the program run fast :(

It's because they'd rather keep adding cool features than fix the core product. It's tough to get people to buy the next iteration when the next iteration is full of supposed fixes.

Perhaps as they continue to move into the cloud as part of CC, they'll make a more concerted effort to fix slowdowns. I haven't used CC, but I wonder if it lags in any way compared to a local install.
