Just wondering if the new 1.4xIII will work with the 100-400 and the 7d or 5dmkII and still maintain auto focus?

Afraid not, as you'll be at f8.

You need a 1 series body or a 5D3 to work at f8, although you do hear of people taping the pins to fool the body into thinking there is no extender present, don't know how successful that is though!

Heya,

Simple solution, get the Kenko 1.4x PRO 300 series. Autofocus will still work. Every bit as good as the Canon in terms of the IQ.

(Just understand autofocus will not be superb, as you're doing it at F8, so it may be hard to track and will hunt a bit unless you're in great light)

Very best,

this. kenko will look just as good but will allow AF, albeit very slow and not very good.

Even though technically a Kenko can be used and AF will work...it will just frustrate you on a 5d2 or 7d. You'll continually rail back and forth while trying to lock focus. I would not recommend going this route as the frustration of missed pics will get to you.

I have the Kenko 1.4 pro and have had no success with using it with the 100-400 + 5dmkII, i think maybe i need to look at the 1series body. thanks for all the replies and tips.

A 1 series body will give you AF but the images won't be that hot. I had the 100-400 for over 5 years and it is a great lens but if you need more reach then you will need a different lens if you are to maintain decent quality. Unfortunately that route is expensive!
Probably the cheapest/least ludicrously expensive route is to get a used Canon 300 F2.8 L IS Mk1. This is stunning as a bare lens, exceptionally good with the Canon 1.4 Mk2 or 3 extender and (in decent light) will reward you with very good images with a Canon 2 x Mk3 extender. As the max aperture of all combinations is F5.6 or better then it will AF on all Canon DSLR bodies.
Far from a cheap solution - but a good one!

I can echo the points that AF is possible but frustrating with the kenko 1.4tc. Using zone AF seems to work best but it is not always point on sharp. It will work if you are not cropping but if you crop much the shots will be soft. Lots of light is needed as previously stated.

Thanks everyone for the info, i have a friend that maybe parting with his 300mm f2.8 mk1 but like it was already mentioned they are not cheap even used. I do enjoy the 100-400 and have gotten some pretty clear pics with it but would love something with a little more reach.

Sigma 120-300 2.8 OS

Sell the 100-400 and your price difference wouldn't be that bad.

Or- I actually had decent luck with a Kenko 1.4TC and the Canon 400mm 5.6L. For some reason the fixed lens was better at dealing with the non-reporting TC on my 7D then my old 100-400 was.

See if they will take a Kidney as a trade in! As a bare lens it will allow you to crop in and get better images, than the 100-400 at 400mm, before you even consider adding extenders. It will AF much faster and resolve considerably more detail. I used to have a Canon 600 F4 L IS Mk1 and (in good light) my Canon 300mm F2.8 L IS Mk1 + a Canon 2 x Mk3 extender was not far behind - though the AF was slower - but accurate.
If there is any, sensible, way you can stretch to this lens then go for it!
