Just wondering if the new 1.4xIII will work with the 100-400 and the 7d or 5dmkII and still maintain auto focus?

Autofocus will still work. Every bit as good as the Canon in terms of the IQ. (Just understand autofocus will not be superb, as you're doing it at F8, so it may be hard to track and will hunt a bit unless you're in great light) Very best, this. kenko will look just as good but will allow AF, albeit very slow and not very good. You'll continually rail back and forth while trying to lock focus. I would not recommend going this route as the frustration of missed pics will get to you.

Mar 24, 2014 23:47 | #6 I have the Kenko 1.4 pro and have had no success with using it with the 100-400 + 5dmkII, i think maybe i need to look at the 1series body. thanks for all the replies and tips.

Mar 25, 2014 15:57 | #7 A 1 series body will give you AF but the images won't be that hot. I had the 100-400 for over 5 years and it is a great lens but if you need more reach then you will need a different lens if you are to maintain decent quality. Unfortunately that route is expensive! Life is for living, cameras are to capture it (one day I will learn how!).

Using zone AF seems to work best but it is not always point on sharp. It will work if you are not cropping but if you crop much the shots will be soft. Lots of light is needed as previously stated.

Mar 27, 2014 19:25 | #10 Thanks everyone for the info, i have a friend that maybe parting with his 300mm f2.8 mk1 but like it was already mentioned they are not cheap even used. I do enjoy the 100-400 and have gotten some pretty clear pics with it but would love something with a little more reach.

As a bare lens it will allow you to crop in and get better images, than the 100-400 at 400mm, before you even consider adding extenders. It will AF much faster and resolve considerably more detail. I used to have a Canon 600 F4 L IS Mk1 and (in good light) my Canon 300mm F2.8 L IS Mk1 + a Canon 2 x Mk3 extender was not far behind - though the AF was slower - but accurate. Life is for living, cameras are to capture it (one day I will learn how!).
