6D & 5D3 Raw images @ 12,800

I have yet to find any normal situation where the 5D3 won't focus in low light. For what the 6D is capable of would almost be too dark to really be shooting anything, at least you won't have any real color to speak of. I know the 6D focuses better in lower light, but after reproducing the light levels they talk about for the 6D, I would never shoot in those conditions.

This is about as low as I go, this is how the scene actually looked, there was barely any light on the troop here, and the 5D3 had no issues locking on.

Ya the 6D is ridiculous at how low it focuses. Literally it's focused on crap I cannot see. The 5D3 is only -1ev off. Much better than the -.05 rating of the 7D.

But like you said you get into light this low and results are blah at best.

Your photo is EV4 by my calculation or close to it.

This nothing special shot was with the 5D3 outer point and it's settings tells me an EV of ~1.5

I will be the first to say if money was not a contributing factor, my recent purchase of a 6D would likely have gone to a 5D3, but for me, money was a factor and for half the price and by my own accounts, better than half the camera of the 5D3, I went with a 6D.
But this discussion is a good one either way.

If Money wasn't a concern for me then I'd have the 1DX, 5D3, 1D4 and a 70D

If money is a factor I'd go for the 6d. You should be able to do everything you want with it including capturing your kids dancing around. The focusing on the 5d3 was a nice treat but it's a lot to pay for that one feature.

I'd probably add a Phase One IQ250 to that mix too. Wipe the floor with the "IQ" of the rest of them.

Is the 6d's focusing system in the same ballpark as the 5d mrk 3's? Serious question not dogging the 6d. I have only used a 5D 3 and for what I shoot. (dance comps) and it is it is outstanding!

Since we are not going to clutter this particular thread up with all that discussion, I will point you over to this thread. If you can actually make it through the thread, there are some good points and tips on managing the AF system, but there is alot of clutter.

See here at DPreview's studio comparison tool. Select PRINT mode and compare the two at higher ISOs. PRINT mode equalizes the sizes, it's an excellent addition to DPreview's IQ comparison tool. Unfortunately, the number of camera models tested so far this way is limited, but the 6D and 5DIII are among them.

The results are close, but still, even after equalizing sizes, the 6D is a little bit better, especially in the shadows. To me personally, this would not be a make or break difference and would be near the bottom of the list of pros and cons for the 2 bodies.

A little bit better in the shadows? Go back to the dpreview Studio scene, and set up a comparison with the 6D and the 5D III. Raw 12,800, select the print icon and chose the incandescent light bulb icon; this will show a lot of high contrast vs shadows areas.

When you move the little rectangular selector around to say where the bottles are, good contrast/shadow areas, you will see that the 6D stomps the 5D III in the ground in dynamic range. The difference is staggering.

And next, for kicks, compare the Nikon D800 or the D610 to the 6D in this setup; the Nikon's look even worse than the 5D III does. Maybe I am missing something here, but, where is the superior Nikon dynamic range advantage?

These differences between the 6D and the 5D III, are what I experienced myself when I owned these two cameras. I started with the 6D, hated the out AF points, bought the 5D III, awesome AF points, sold the 6D and thought that was the end of that. Well, I missed the high ISO noise advantage that the 6D had over the 5D III, again, what you see in that dpreview studio scene is what I experienced; bought the 6D, sold the 5D III and am quite happy with that decision.

Now, I will admit, that in most other shooting scenarios, the 5D III is definitely the superior camera. I shoot a lot of high ISO stuff so the 6D is a better fit, to each their own.

Yep, you're missing something. The Nikon DR "advantage" is at ISO 100. That advantage disappears at higher ISO levels.

I dunno about some of you guys, but how often do you shoot at ISO12800?

Even if you do, those will only ever gonna end up as snapshot or small print, does the lil difference in shadow which btw only visible when pixel peeping matters in reality?

Generally, you're right - those high ISO shots aren't likely to be printed large and stared at, but, for example - poke thru the performing arts section and you'll see quite a few excellent shots at 12800 - with that kind of poor or inconsistent lighting, having a capable camera (and the required skill to use it) helps immensely.

You are preaching to the converted I own a 6D...

When I said "little bit better", I purposefully avoided phrases like "stomps" or "the difference is staggering". I was simply covering my bases, which wise forum members should do if they want to avoid the avalanche of "polite" comments that usually follow

But regardless, when using the PRINT mode, and that's what everybody should use, especially when comparing a 36mp D800, I do believe that the 6D is ahead, it's clear, no doubt about it. But again, I wouldn't use "stomps" or "staggering" etc., but that's just me and how I phrase my posts here. But yes, the difference is certainly visible.

I shoot at 12800 every single night at the NBA D League games. The images are clean enough to print as 20x30 posters.
