I am trying to find the best bag to keep a1D4/70-200 and a 5D2/24-70 ready to shoot.
So far what I have seen will require reversing the hood on the 70-200.
I am considering a Think Tank Retrospective 40.

Any suggestions?

I'd have to have a measure but have you looked at the TT Streetwalker Pro?

Backpack? I have a Lowepro Runner 350AW that would hold those cameras nicely.

Hi TAPEMAN,

I empathize, as many of us have gone through your thought process & undoubtedly bag iteration process (& of course, as you have self-declared in your signature- bags matching ones shoes!).

Your criteria of not having the lens hoods reversed, as you know, limits your shoulder bag possibilities; however obviously that is your individual decision/preference.
(tradeoff between extra 3-5 seconds/lens hood of time vs bulkier bag)

Dificult to define your other criteria of "the best". As with life, almost all categories of photography gear are a trade-off; but if you tolerated lens hoods reversed, I would have suggested the following as a few accomodating possible options…

Lowepro MAGNUM 200AW:
[ID capacity: 838 cubic inches Wt: 3.8lbs]
http://www.bhphotovideo.com …gnum_200_AW_Shoulder.html (external link)
-advantages: narrowish/relatively comfortable profile when against your body & has lots of convenient outside pockets as well as loops for adding additional pouches.
-a very versatile bag, enabling you to be well positioned for almost any photo application, surprising capacity, as well as Lowepro hallmark good quality & protection.

Lowepro NOVA 200AW:
[ID capacity: 782 cubic inches Wt: 3.0lbs]
http://www.bhphotovideo.com …Nova_200_AW_Shoulder.html (external link)
-advantages: inexpensive for capacity, good quality & protection.
-(also if only had one camera, has bag width of 13" to handle a 1D or 5D with mounted 70-200f2.8 +mounted2xTC so you are ready with mid-range telephoto function).

For general photography my always ready/go-to setup includes carrying a Canon 1DmkIII with mounted 70-200f2.8L IS mkII (with hood reversed) and a Canon 5DmkIII with mounted 24-70f2.8L mkII (with hood reversed), fitting nicely in either of the above bags (along with 85f1.2L., 2xTC2mkIII, 600EX-RT & E3-RT).

Just one view.
Good luck with your selection process.

Mary
P.S.
Not to sound like an nagging wfe or something your chiropractor or doctor may have already gently reminded you of...
take care of your shoulders, neck and back over the years, if you are consistently carrying two cameras with mounted lenses (particularly a 70-200f2.8 brick) in a shoulder bag (rather than a back pack, belt system, or Cotton Carrier vest, or some such arrangement).
For an all 8-12 hour day true “shooting bag” with only one camera & if needing to be able to put my camera away, I prefer the ThInk Tank City Walker 20, or Think Tank Speed Racer V2.0(if have a lot of stuff) with nifty retractable waist belt, or Speed Freak V2.0(if have small amount of stuff) with nifty retractable waist belt.
For two-camera applications such as portrait sessions, weddings or events, for to & from site - I prefer to pull (in Think Tank Airport International V2.0 rolling bag), rather than to carry.

Thanks Mary, I often carry quite a bit of gear. I do however, carry it in a variety of ways including backpacks.
One thing you learn over the years is how to minimize the stress/hassle of carrying your gear and knowing what not to bring. (Still working on that.:))

Good to read that; time/years has yielded you knowledge. (As one can learn it the easy way, or hard way sometimes with lifetime consquences).
Less is often more. Again good luck.

Today I bought a Think Tank Retrospective 40. I tried it at the camera store and it holds 2 cameras ready to shoot, (almost - hood on 70-200 reversed)

Two bodies & the "zoom trinity" whoo hoo!
