Upgrade to 70D - Lense Compatibility?

Last week the shutter of my 450D broke after (only) 51000 clicks (and 5 years of operation). I was very happy with the 450D but was considering an upgrade already a while.

I'm now thinking of buying the 70D and want to keep my lenses. The question is thus whether these are compatible. I have the following three lenses:

  • Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC (rather old but very good & versatile)
  • Tamron 70-300 mm F4-5.6 Di VC USD
  • Canon EF 50mm f/1.8

Can somebody advise me?
Many thanks,

Jan

Well I know the Canon 50mm will be compatible at least. The other two might not be 100% compatible with video focus.

All EF compatible and EFS compatible lenses should fit and work on the 70D. The non-STM lenses will be louder when focusing, and therefore less "welcome" since the noise of the motors can easily be recorded through the onboard microphone.

If they worked on your 450D, the should work on a 70D given that they both have the same mounts and are both ASP-C sensor cameras.

Personally, I'd pick up the kit with the 18-55 STM, which is an extremely sharp lens for its cost with absolutely silent autofocus. That way you get to use your lenses still - which will probably work without issue - and you get the benefit of smooth & quiet video autofocus, so you can use the camera to its abilities.

You can get good deals on used copies if you keep a keen eye out. Picked mine up (70D + 18-55 STM, with only 318 shutter clicks) for only $1020 from a college student that needed money. :)

The wanting never ends. The budget ends, oh yes, but not the wanting.

Thanks all for your comments. I ended up buying the 700d since I'm not that much into video and didn't want to spend +400 € extra for the 70d with more or less the same image quality. I'm still able to use all my current lenses, gorillapod and lightroom, and I have saved some money to go to full frame earlier ;)

I followed the advise to pick up the 18-55 STM kit lens for when I want to do some video. It was indeed not a lot of extra money and it's extremely quiet!
