what are some other comparable flashes? Prices seems to have gone up considerablly on ebay recently. I just need a manual slave flash for my 430ex.

Not sure how you are planning to use it as a slave, but I had bought a couple Sunpak 383's (B&H about $70-$80) and additional slave triggers (ebay about $15-$20) to fire them. Keep in mind the 430EX may emit a preflash that could falsely trigger the slave.

Megapixels and high ISO are a digital photographers heroin. Once you have a little, you just want more and more. It doesn't stop until your bank account is run dry.

just looking for a hair or side light. I thought when in manual mode the preflash will be suppressed.

If you mean with the flash in manual mode, you're correct. If you were just planning to put the camera in M, that leaves the flash in E-TTL mode and you'll get a pre-flash. You can buy "digital slaves" which will ignore the preflash though.

Does the sunpac 383 have adjustment while in full manual? My 283's with vari-power can be dialed in from full to 1/64th.

60D, Canon 18-135 IS, Sigma 10-20 hsm, 24-70 2.8 hsm, 70-200 2.8 hsm, 430EX II, and all the other stuff that goes along with it.

It's an equivalent of 285 vivitars. Only a bit more convenient: f/2 f/4 and f/8 in thyristor mode at ISO 100

And 1/2 1/4 1/8 and 1/16 in manual. I think I'd prefer the sunpak, because I like shooting at f/2 instead of f/2.8

Unlike vivitar it also swivels. :D

Not continuously variable, but Full, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16 with a slider on the back. The PC terminal voltage I measured at 6.75vdc. I had bought two of them as replacements for my aging Vivitar 283's that had a PC terminal voltage of about 300vdc. So far they've worked very well for me as a portable setup with umbrellas where there is no AC to power monolights. Also they see use on a couple of older 35mm and MF film cameras. I've put one on my 20D a couple of times and it's auto exposure did a decent job getting it right (20D in manual - no ETTL with this flash). The swivel and bounce head is good as well and the GN of 120 has plenty of kick to it for bouncing. For the money I think it's a good value.
