Well that changes everything, as predicted. This is why I did not vote. A FF camera is a much better option then if you keep the 7D. 7D is fantastic for wildlife and airshows and the 5D II is fantastic for portraits and the like. The 1D III is the best compromise of the two so if you want one camera, the 1D III is it (unless you want to go 1D IV, 5D III etc which are much more costly).

I would definitely recommend getting the 6D over thed 5D II if possible, however. I got mine brand new for $1450 with canon 2 year warranty and haven't looked back! The only option out there currently that would make me think twice about it is the A7R. If you can the 5D II for a steal, however (~$1000) I would recommend that instead.

Not really. Question was, which would you choose ? I mentioned mostly what I shot. I could have the 1Dx and it would not affect the question at hand

Actually it would due to the fact the 1DX would easily handle all of your requirements, thus making the question redundant (unless you wanted a back-up etc in which case the 5D III it is).

I still highly, highly recommend the 5D II (or 6D if budget permits). Based on the info you have provided, it's a no-brainer.

Nope. Camera I have now does not matter. That is why I left out that info at the start. I stated I was looking at getting another camera body and asked which everyone thought would be a better fit with the type of shooting I do based on their experiences with the cameras listed.

Thanks for the help. I do appreciate the recommendations and advice. I have not been able to try either for myself. I will give the 6D a try this weekend

I don't think you understand why I am saying that. Basically if someone asks for a secondary camera, it is generally going to mean that they want it to compliment their current camera (unless otherwise stated, which you did not specify either way). So I asked which camera you currently have so I can recommend one which will compliment it. That would be the 5D II. The 7D for wildlife and airshows and the 5D II for flowers, portraiture and landscape. I don't see the point in having a camera nearly the same as the one you have now (1D III and 7D), hence my suggestion.

If you had specifically stated you wanted a specific camera to shoot those subjects (you actually said that's what you shoot, an assumption is made that you will split the work between the two cameras). Merely two different minds at work here.

But yes, definitely give the 6D a go! It's a fantastic camera.

I am looking at getting another camera body. Wanting to go up to a full frame. So for you that have or had these cameras, which do you think would work best .

My main things I shoot are landscapes, wildlife, airshows, flowers. With occasional portraits.

I know the 1D outshines the 5D as far as frames per second. With that said, I am not a speed freak. SO that kind of takes the back burner but, is still in the decision making. Although just a small part.

Thanks for any help in adance

I understand completely. This is not a secondary camera. I wanted to know very simply which one everyone thought would work best (those that have used them) for the type of shooting I do. Did not say I wanted it to go with, compliment, work side by side with or anything along that nature with the camera I have now. Again, that is the whole reason I left out what camera I have currently. Has absolutely nothing to do with what I was asking. . I do not know if I will keep the 7D, sell it, donate it to the school, whatever. The 7D has no role in this discussion. I can see how one would " assume" it though.

Thanks everyone for all the input. Looks like the 1D Mlll wins out of these two choices.

I think your use of the word 'another' is what threw people off. Had you said that you wanted to 'replace' your camera or not mentioned another camera at all, it would have been clearer to us.

In any case, I think the 1D3 is a better value right now as it had depreciated quite a bit.

It's all good. He is just trying to help.

But, aren't we all looking for "another" camera at one point or another? LOL

Really, I hesitate to mention this, I don't want to start bad posts, flaming, or really, change the OP's help options.

I know a guy that is a professional photographer and he had 2 1DIIIS cameras, and another 1D (version not known), he tried to send it in to get the shutter fixed and Canon wouldn't work on it any longer, his 1DIIIs had just became outdated.
All I know is that is what he told a few of us, he ended up buying a 5DIII and was happy. (I really don't remember if it was the 1DIIs or the 1DIIIs right now, I am really not that familiar with those models)

I have not read this on this forum, it may be well known, or it may not be true, that is only what I was told. So, if it is true, a 1DIII (non s) may not be able to be fixed should you need it. That may not apply to any other 1D but the S model, I don't know. All I'm saying is, check on that before you buy, it'd be bad if you bought a used camera and it broke soon after and you couldn't find any parts, or, anyone to fix it.

I'm not trying to stir up trouble, but if I were wanting to do what the OP is wanting to do, I'd like for someone to tell me.

My dilemma is I rather only have one body and presently I have a 7D which I feel has great AF capability compared to less capable 5DII or even 6D. The superior higher ISO and image quality is tempting though. I chose the 7D because at the time my daughter was seriously into rep soccer and I was the unofficial team photographer. The 7D truly handles that very well. This is no longer an issue as she has aged out on the soccer. Sports won't play much of a part but I still have a real use for my hunting dog and often birds that explode out of cover which makes for great shots. So a good AF and higher FPS is something I hate to part with. I quite like the user interface and ergos of my 7D and I'm not hard on my gear so the 1D bodies are not a necessity for me. I owned a 1Dsii for a while but it was going to need some repairs so I just traded it for the 7D. Back to the original question of the OP, if owning 2 bodies isn't a problem then a 5D2 7D combo is nice with the only con being you can't use any APS-C lenses on the 5D2.

I have a 1DII and a 1DIII.... Outstanding AF and the image quality lacks nothing in my opinion... Get excellent results on tight crops.... Built like tanks and the ergonomics are great even for a big camera... Can't speak to the 5DII as I have never had one....

Personally, I would be very surprised if this was the case for the 1DMk3 (or especially the 1DsMk3). The general procedure has been to provide service for 7 years after the date of last production, which in the case of the 1DMk3 was in the third quarter of 2009 (or at least the replacement 1DMk4 became available then ... on October 2009).

If the seven year rule holds, even if the last 1DMk3 rolled off the lines at the end of 2008, it still will be serviced until the end of 2015, and the date may be as much as nine months later, if they were made as late as September.

In fact, the 1DsMk3 ended production almost two years later than the 1DMk3, so if the seven years hold for it, it will be serviced until the end of 2017, even longer than the 1DMk3.

To support this notion we know that:

1. Canon issued a firmware update for the 1DMk3 (and the 1DsMk III) as recently as July 30, 2013.
2. Here in Canada, the requirements for being a CPS member require ownership of specific camera models and parts availability is assured for these specific models only.
In Canon's words (quoted from the CPS site, as of today April 4, 2014):

"Eligible products for member registration and service.
In order to ensure rapid service turnaround, parts availability is assured for the following products. Any products not listed below will not be eligible for service turnaround within our stated turnaround targets. Please contact your CPS representative when in doubt. New products will be added to this list as they are released into the market and older products will be removed as their service life expires."

EOS 70D
EOS 7D
EOS 6D
EOS 5D Mark II, EOS 5D Mark III
EOS 1D Mark II N, EOS 1D Mark III, EOS 1D Mark lV
EOS 1Ds Mark II, EOS 1Ds Mark III
EOS 1D X

Notice that the 1DMk2 is missing, for example; it was announced it had reached the end of its service life in 2012 as I remember (this would agree with seven years after it's last production sometime in 2005).
Also notice the 1DMk2N is still listed, even though it must have ended production in mid 2007 or so, two years before the 1DMk3. I would expect it to be dropped from active service at least some time before the younger 1DMk3 or 1DsMk3.

I checked this out back in 2012 when I began to be interested in getting a 1D series body. I had decided on seeking a 1DMk2N, but when the announcement came that the 1DMk2 had reached the end of it's service life, I deliberately switched to a 1DMk3 to ensure I was 2 models ahead of the curve, so to speak. When I got my 1DMk3 in February 2013, I expected the 1DMk2N to be delisted by now; the fact it has not been would seem to indicate that the 1DMk3 has quite some time left.

3. Just read on this Forum, in another thread (1DMk3 Owners Group) that "... They (i.e Canon in Elstree, UK) also mentioned 1D Mark III spare parts should be readily available until July 2016 ..."
