Hi all,

Just checking in with a first post. I'm from the UK and have been taking aviation photos for about five years. Looking to branch out into other forms of photography too, so I thought this might be a good place to be.

Any comments or criticism for these or any other of my photos will be warmly received as I am eager to learn.

1. French AF Alpha Jet

I think that you could trim a bit off the bottom of some of these, especially #1, but they are nice shots.

Thanks! Not really thought too much about cropping before, just tried to keep the whole aircraft in a keep a 2x3 ratio. Thinking about it now though, I definitely need to work on it!

Very nice. I like # 1 the way it is.

There's nothing sacred about 2:3, or any other format. Load your image & see how it works in the Composition Adjuster. (external link)

Very nice series, composition is just fine. The low angle view from the runway really works for the first shot.

Have to agree with ERJL, nice angle and lighting!

Nice series; #1 is my favorite. But, it could have been improved by having the plane further to the right to give more "head" room to it, so it wasn't so cramped against the left edge of the frame.

Thanks everyone for your replies. The composition question certainly seems to divide opinion. I was happy with the composition of #1, but now I'm not so sure!

Thanks for the advice regarding me being attached to the 4x3 ratio, I'll try not to be in future!

Thanks again

Paul

Well, it's a nice shot.
Generally, centered images are static & have a peaceful quality, where off centered ones by the rule of thirds are more dynamic. Try cropping it & then comparing that to the original to see what you think then.

Funny thing about cropping… I am a video guy as well as photographer. I'd say 90% of my photos are cropped 16:9
It works well with aircraft because of the shape. And I've never had a problem printing or publishing.

Now… There's some shots that just don't work that way and need different aspect ratios. Like #2. Only thing I'd tweak on this is bringing out the jet wash in post. That way it fills the space with something very cool.

#4 is awesome! Wish we had enough humidity here to get vapor! :(

1,3, & 5 would all be candidates for 16:9

# 5 looks like the nose and top of the plane are a bit washed out. Can fix by bringing down highlights.

But I'm being picky.
These are all great shots! Look forward to seeing more!

Impressive start - especially on your first post. Well done with your personal processing techniques.

Thanks for that, I'll have a go at some 16:9 crops tomorrow. I've never thought of using this ratio before, but I like to look of movies in 16:9 so I'm looking forward to seeing which photos suit it.

Again, thanks for all the kind comments :D
