Great title and shot, bet the heart beat was off the charts for the squirrel.

As far as the outcome:
The squirrel lived to see another day. The interesting part of the story was more in what led to this photo. The hawk was in a different tree, and I had a clear view of him, although the light wasn't great. After watching/photographing him for 45 minutes, I noticed the squirrel come down the same tree and then lay motionless on a branch for a while.

I thought, "This could get interesting!" After a while, the hawk hopped to a different branch, causing the squirrel to scramble. Then the hawk switched trees (and got pestered by a mockingbird). The squirrel went on about his business, but to my surprise, switched to the same tree as the hawk. He went up the tree, above the hawk, and even looked down at him a couple of times. Finally, he came down the tree and to my surprise, started out on the same branch as the hawk. He got even closer than in the above photo, but when the hawk moved slightly, the squirrel jumped back.

I guess that there are subtle signs that let the squirrel know that the hawk isn't interested in eating him. Or maybe, it was just a stupid squirrel.

After this photo, the squirrel went on his way, and I moved on looking for other things to shoot. By the way, this all occurred in downtown Atlanta, inside a property's fenced in area. Many people walked by me on the sidewalk as I took photos of the hawk. I had gone to the city looking for something other than birds to shoot, but when I see a hawk, I instantly become focused on it. I was surprised by how many hawks I saw in the city.
