I'm really not at "people" photographer. Not at all. Reading this forum has started to bug me a bit, however. You see, I have a five-year-old son, who is a big ham and loves the camera. He's terribly neglected when it comes to my photography.

I decided to play around, and he was game. The photos aren't perfect, but here are the best two:

I blew out his arm in the first series, and the second one is a touch underexposed (I'd like to brighten up his face and the book just a little bit). I tried dodging and burning, but I suck at it. My Photoshop class starts on Tuesday, and I think I'll bring the images along for feedback.

My sister, the professional baker and cake decorator once told me that my camera takes great pics. My reply was that I thought her oven baked great cakes.

Very nice. If you have Photoshop CC you could open the Camera Raw filter and increase the highlights a wee bit in the second one.

That's very nice, casp3r!

I do use Photoshop CC. I suspect I wasn't being subtle enough with the highlight slider. I'm generally not very good at subtle. My Photoshop class starts tomorrow, and I'll be bringing these two images (along with some others) along in an attempt to learn how to fix them up nicely.

Nice job. It gives me a few ideas

I used an LED flashlight for this, which was a bad idea (I was too lazy to head out to our travel trailer and fish out the non-LED lights). I found that it was a difficult type of light to work with in post.

Depending on the age of your subject(s), a non-LED book light might work better. My little guy was too interested in playing with the flashlight for the first image. I'd show him where I wanted him to hold it, and next thing I new it was being flashed around all over the place. Finally I laid it on his bed and pointed it towards him, and I made him promise not to touch it. But, I blew his arm out.

There was no ambient light in the room. I've seen images like these done a few times, but always with ambient light in the room. Next time I try it, I think I'll try some limited ambient, and then try to darken the surroundings in post.

Shelley don't want to hijack your post but just to give you an idea this is one I did at Christmas. I put a flash gun in the box and fired it remotely. It's not perfect and I want to explore this again.

Oh, I like that idea! Thank you for sharing. :) I'd love to try this.
