i think you need more DOF, and i dont think the angle lends itself to the photo.. sorry. colours look good though.

mmm... yum

Good shot- nice and crisp (where it's in focus). Colours are rich too. I agree with stu, you need more DOF- I don't know what the industry standard might be, but I would want at least 80-90% of the cake in focus. I'm not sure about the angle of the cake either- there are a lot of lines but none are horizontal or vertical and it's making me dizzy. Play with this some more...

Your using the 50 F1.8 at F2 for this type of shot is too small, you need a min of f5.6, plus the camera is too high lower the camera and increase to f5.6 and it will look better.

I've seen a few cakes like that, but it was after a heavy drinking session. That takes me back!

You can lose the plate with depth of field, but you probably need a bit more of the food. Sorry I am just repeating what has been said.

...beacause a fancy chef would be very concerned about seeing his whole creation, not just the chocolate shavings on the top?

Sorry, the above post sounds a little harsh....I do agree with the others though that it may look better with more DOF.

I don't know I think the cake top needs to be more in focus.

DOF is too shallow -- unless it is a shot of the chocolate sprinkles ...
