LOL. Right, so the wool is no good.

Joayne, I looked in different online dictionaries, like the Free Dictionary and Merriam Webster and in the end used Google Translate (why use my own most excellent English-Dutch dictionary that sits right there on a shelf! ).

Anyway, there was also the mentioning of "knotty" and "knot" and that is where things went wrong. Obviously I know what "knot" means. But Dutch also has a word "knot" and in the phrase "een knot wol" it means "a ball of yarn/wool" ("clew" maybe in English?). So together with "twisted" that I also saw somewhere, I think I mixed up the two languages! Oh boy. That's what you get when you are ill: you loose the ability to use your brain!!

However, I now have a pretty good understanding of the word "gnarled" and will try another shot in the coming days. Do you want me to remove the bowl of wool? Thank you for your nice comment on the shot, by the way, Jo. I did a focus stack again. Photoshop didn't do a perfect job this time and I manually had to correct it. I'm going to look at that Zerene Stacker!

so...
but in English is can be a slang term as well as meaning

gnarled - adjective
1. (of trees) full of or covered with gnarls; bent; twisted.
2. having a rugged, weather-beaten appearance: a gnarled old sea captain.
3. crabby; cantankerous.

also as slang meaning something great and exciting, and slightly dangerous (gnarly)
used most often by surfers (hence Stina's comment)

....)

One of our local definitions leans towards the uncomfortable, as in "gnarly weather" when it start pouring down just as I'm about to take the dogs for their exercise.

The way things are looking out there at present...that may be my next gnarly shot!

Levina, please don't remove that bowl of wool...it will form a lovely counterpoint to all the gnarly photos about to arrive!

If Jo doesn't mind then I will leave the shot where it is, Richard. Thanks!
I'm getting quite an education and I love it! I will remember "gnarled" and "gnarly" for the rest of my life!! :D

The American Heritage Dictionary says a gnarl is a protruding knot on a tree. So I didn't have quite the right idea of what's gnarled, either, and I am a native English speaker. I associated gnarliness with twisted branches and especially tangled ones, or twisted and tangled lengths of something else. So Levina's balls of yarn would have done perfectly if they'd been messier. (I like the photo, though.) Of course, no one who maintains such a clean refrigerator would tolerate disorderly yarn.

It seems that being gnarled has to do with irregular bumps rather than tangles.

That is quite funny, OhLook, as I first tried with actual "knots" of wool, where "knots" here is the Dutch word for the twisted, loosely knotted way in which wool comes when you buy it. The problem was that it was messy and just not very attractive so I decided to use balls instead!

PLEASE do leave your image...
It is a fabulous image and with that definition fits the subject perfectly!
although.. and I am afraid to say this.. messy balls would have fit even better as definition suggests :o:o

This is what I always hope for this thread... that we work across culture, definition and imagination! What could be better than to try to accept new definitions? ...or at least new perspectives!

You are way cool, Jo!!

I will leave the image but you are very right and so I will reshoot it with the messy "knots" of wool as then I would be much closer to the definition. I may actually shoot it in daylight this time. :)

If you will accept our local definition of gnarly relating to the weather, then this from last night should count.

This is gnarly weather, folks! Not really bad, but coming our way, with the first skiff of snow on the hills for this autumn.

Levina, its not a word I would use, and had to check on it, so maybe a term that gets use outside of Europe  . I have still to find something to fit the bill yet.

Thank you so much, Jo.

We paid for that outlook today... it rained most of the day and welcome it was too...specially as it stopped just as I reached our walking hill this evening!

Not being a native speaker of English I had to look up "gnarled."
I do get Richard's pic (nice! a tree with character!), but I don't entirely get John's pics? They're great shots but I'm clearly missing some of the connotations of this week's theme.

I hope this qualifies?

I think it qualifies Levina. I believe Gnarly is most defined in one's mind. Good one.:)

My wife and I were discussing the definition(s) of this week's theme when we walked past this sign and she said: "Now that's gnarly. My wife is never wrong. So it must be gnarly...
