Sony A7s is nearly what I wanted Canon to make in 2010

With the recent announcement of Sony A7s. Sony has come the closest to what I was looking for back in 2010.

I do not need 20mp. But do want a lower pixel count so pics and video can have great high ISO capabilities. But I guess Canon is in a position of success and they can just wait and see what happens in the market as well as follow. No one will jump ship.

Guess I'll be the lone Canon shooter looking at Sony real carefully. Seems mirrorless is making great strides.

If nikon puts that sensor in one I'll be sold.

I'm not sold on an EVF or sony lenses right now though

I guess if it had a complete line of lenses then it would be an interesting option. Maybe by 2018 or so.

You are not alone!

One of the things that tempts me about the new Sony is the ability to use my old Minolta MC/MD manual lenses. It's a nostalgia thing.

I like the idea of having much smaller gear, like my old Minolta stuff.

Practically speaking, I will wait for a bigger lens lineup. When I switched to digital from the old Minolta gear, the lens lineup was one of the major factors for me, and Canon bodies felt the best in my hands.

Yes true! There is a lot of older glass from Minolta days that would be not only inexpensive but also nice to use with all that smooth gliding metal.

And what iso would you like to shoot with? A few ff bodies offer nearly 2 stop improvements over the first 5d.

Forget "A complete line of lenses", just "enough lenses", there's currently no ultra-wide or a supertele (or really, anything above 200mm) without resorting to MF lenses or expensive converters.

exactly, and you can always resize the image in post.

Oh joy, 4k Video, so I can share it with exactly.... no one I know who owns a 4k set, and I can store massive video files! This entire camera, to me, smells like yet another of Sony's attempts to push their new TV tech by making other products that use it (anyone else remember the 3D camcorders?). Just like 3D, I don't see 4K has catching on at the current price point. Eventually the "high end" sets will all just be 4k, just like they all have 3D now, but there isn't really a price premium for it because it failed miserably.

OLED is really the ground breaking TV tech, so until there is an affordable OLED 4K TV to combine both techs, I wouldn't even consider 4k. Spending the premium for one with LED backlighting now is just silly with OLED finally coming to market.

4K has serious advantages to filmmakers. It's not just about having super clear picture, just like with stills a higher resolution allows you to crop in post without much loss in quality. This can be a huge advantage for things like documentaries or Internet news shows or cutting back on the number of cameras needed for a shoot.

That said, I think Sony's implication here is a failed one since it can't record straight to the card like the Panasonic GH4 can. I think most amateur film makers will still opt for the GH4, I would.

Also, 4K is definitely a technology worth keeping an eye on, when I first saw it in person I was awe struck, absolutely noticeable improvement over 1080p.

Wow, the specs on this camera is pretty good, it's like a $1700 black magic camera. I might pick one up for my video productions
