Which lens do you think is best for horse racing? 300mm 2.8 is II or a 400mm 2.8 IS I. Any advice would be appreciated..

Where are you shooting from? thats the big question.

If you can't get down to the rail/fence of the stands I would go for the 400. If you can walk down there, the 300 should be ideal. at least from my experience at a race.

Any reasonably competent telephoto lens will be useful, depending on the distance. Examples:

Color Space: sRGB

However, realize that racing photographers often use wide-angle lenses mounted on the inside rail and remotely triggered.

Also, if it is at night, I would opt for the shorter lens to allow slower shutter speeds without blur

Go really long, like 600mm, if you will be shooting head on from the end of the stretch past the finish line. From the outside rail shooting straight up the track could easily be over 100 yards to just the finish line. The finish line to the 1/16 pole is 110 yards if you are shooting the start of a race like the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland. A 70-200 is fine if you will be near the finish line shooting the finish.

I am not exactly sure where you will be standing or exactly what you want to shoot.

I have the 300 2.8IS and have got some great shots but as others have said, it all depends where you are going to stand. If you are on the bend coming into the final turn, they are coming right at you…just watch out because they come by fast!
Which track are you going to?

Mostly keeneland, possibly Churchill downs. But I'm pretty sure they've tighten up security so I'm not sure how to get access

Keeneland should be no problem. There were several white lenses there last weekend.

Churchill could be anything, too many clueless people in management positions there. They are totally out of touch with the real world and the "little people" that don't have access to the luxury rooms. The only thing 100% known is the increasingly large number of empty seats after the first Saturday in May.
