How nifty is the Nifty-Fifty? (EF 50mm f/1.8 II)

I've been pixel-peeping/reviewing my work, and have found that either I suck at focusing or the stock, image-stabilized EF-S 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 is a soft lens. I hadn't ever noticed it until I started using a nifty-fifty. Is the sharpness on it really that good compared to my other lens?

I also find it's perfect for portraiture: leave aperture at 1.8, use crop camera, add model, posing, and lighting, press shutter button and receive pretty photo.

the 18-55IS certainly is't the sharpest of lenses, but without seeing a picture, or knowing your settings it's going to be hard for anyone to tell you if it's the lens, or you...

When I had the same combo I definitely preferred the 50 1.8! Around f8 and with some good PP, the 18-55 could sure get you some good results from it.

Compared to kit lens I LOVE my nifty 50, even with it's slow AF, poor focus hunting in low light, and the limitations indoors due to it making things feel cramped in frame it is my favorite of my current lenses and rarely comes off (I even sold my kit lens because of it). Granted some day I will save up enough money for a 17-55 2.8 but for now the Nifty produces shots that are night and day better than my kit lens (and I still have access to my wifes 18-135stm, which every now and again I plop on just to verify it isn't bias).

Now it doesn't due so hot with fast moving objects but I still manage some keepers, and the quality of the keepers IMO beat almost anything I shot with kit (granted I shoot wide open @2.0 to 2.8 far more often than not occasionally moving down to 1.8)

I was wondering about that too... Here is a comparison at 100% crop. Participants are the nifty, the 18-200 (my version of kit lens) and an ancient EF 35-70 (ca late 80s) that came as a kit lens for my EOS 630 film camera.

They look pretty similar to me...

The nifty fifty is a great lens for slow or non-moving subjects. the process is ugly but the product is great. For a hundred bucks you can't go wrong.

I found the "nifty-fifty" to be soft at 1.8 and inconsistent in focusing, as well as a focal length that wasn't suited to my shooting, not to mention the get-what-you-pay-for build quality - not at all "nifty" for me.

Since I got the Pancake it the Nifty stays home most days but I do agree that for $100 its a bargain. Right now I loaned mine out to a friend to try out with his new 60D refurb.

my nifty is a great lens though with owning the pancake it doesn't see much action anymore. I find the nifty is best stopped down to 2.8 or smaller. Heck I shot a whole bunch of pictures at my cousin's wedding with just the 50 on my 50D @ 5.6 and flash at +1

The camera is just a tool - it is not responsible for the picture.

Is the 40mm Pancake as sharp and contrasty as the 50 @2.8 or is the 40 soft at it's most wide open end just like the 50 tends to be?

Soft? AF no good? I grant you, it's not meant for sports, but it's sharp enough at f1.8... ;)
