Ring flash question

How is it that a ring flash can apply a nice catch light to an eye, but not cause red eye at the same time?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but red eye is caused by light bouncing off the back of the eyeball.

Wouldn't a flash mounted around the lens do just that?

You are correct that ring flash will cause red eye and usually needs to be retouched out.
