I'm considering this lens (together with my 350D sans battery grip) as an ultimate light birding combo, hence I borrowed my friend's copy for testing vs. my 400 5.6L today.

Meantime, the moon peeked behind the clouds over Manila last night, so just for fun I took potshots at it using the 300 f4 L IS at 840 mm. ...

Nice shot, as usual. I think the 300/4 L IS is probably my favorite lens overall. I use it mostly for macro though. 25mm ext, maybe a 1.4x, monopod, ISO 400 and you have great dragonflies, butterflies from a wroking distance for 3 to 5 feet.

Another great Romy Moon shot! 50% crop seems to be the sweet spot with the stacked converters.

As Gasrocks notes, another thing you will like with the 300/4 is it's almost-macro close-focusing distance. With a 1.4X teleconverter, it's roughly 1/3 life-size. With the 2X, it's 1/2.

Shoot-out: 300 f/4 L IS vs. 400 f/5.6 L

Thanks, guys.

I just finished testing my friend's 300 f4 L IS vs. my 400 5.6L. I think I'm impressed enough to consider the 300 as my next lens purchase...:)

Here's the shoot-out:
