When is affordable 4K video coming to Canon DSLR's or Mirrorless models??

I like the incredible detail of 4K video, but I don't like Sony and Panasonic video colors. I'm longing for an affordable (~$1,500 - $2,000) 4K video capable interchangable lens camera from Canon. Anyone know if and when one might be coming? Thanks.

Do you really need 4K? Or do you just "like it"?

LOL ;)

I know a lot of folks interested in video who keep asking about 4k, and I'm like "Do you have a 4k tv? No. Then don't worry about shooting 4k." Of course, these are people still trying to learn Vegas and rendering video LOL.

But being serious, Magic Lantern will probably unlock 4k on Canon DSLRs before Canon does it from the factory. They want people to fork over the big bucks on the C lineup. You know how Canon loves to tier their products.

There used to be some rumors of a 7D2 that shot 4k video. Besides Canon releasing a new camera, 1DC is it.

They can't unlock it. The memory card interfaces are simply not up to par to record it well.

The next "wave" of cameras should have it. or at least the higher end models will.

I think the smart move for the 7D2 would be to have it. Especially pricing it at 2-2.5k This would be another game changer.

Well I upgraded to a new Samsung Note 3 a couple of weeks ago. That offers 4K video:eek:. Do I have a 4K TV? no I do not even have an HDTV, mine is still built on a CRT and in 4:3 ratio! As is the 1280×1024 pixel screen on my computer! Although I guess I can at least see 1280x720 video on the computer. Of course the phone itself offers full HD 1920×1080 but a 5.7" screen is not huge. Although at over 380 PPI it looks fantastic. I guess it won't be too many years before we see a 30" display offering that sort of resolution, although a 3:2 ratio would be good for stills.

Folks used to say that about High Def vs Std Def cameras. Once you've experienced Ultra High Def (4K) video there's no going back. Sony has an affordable 4K camcorder, the $1999 FDR-AX100, and Panasonic has the $1699 GH4 micro four thirds interchangable lens camera coming out later this month. Pentax has a interchangable lens 4K camera coming out too.

So naturally one wonders when Canikon are going to offer affordable 4K models.

I also found out editing 4K video is not the daunting task that some imagine it to be. I was able to import some 4K footage into my low cost ($60) Adobe Premier Elements 12 program, do some editing and export it as a 4K file for upload to Youtube using my base model 2013 model Apple Macbook Pro with only 8 GB of RAM.

Sure, you're right. It really doesn't matter whether you need it or like it, if you want to shoot 4k you can shoot 4k. All i'm saying is the 4k system is a different beast from 1080. You need lots of storage, lots of it. And sure you can edit it however but once you get deeper into bigger videos a few minutes in, memory and storage really gets taxed.

But if your final presentation platform is youtube I would say there is absolutely no point...it would be incredibly hard to tell the difference after youtubes compression. And very rarely do people view videos past 1080p quality, nor do we all have the internet speed or patience to load 4k quality.

If you're display can't broadcast 4k then all you're seeing is down scaled 1080p (assuming your monitor can display it), shooting in 4k has no advantage in this regard, a good 1080p camera (like a Panasonic GH3) will yield you video that's just as sharp and detailed. The advantage of 4k for a non-4k display is only thanks to the ability to crop and pan within a frame.
