That seems perfectly reasonable. Hey, I have been rolling a m42 mount Pentax as my 50 because of exactly what you just said, there was nothing worth switching to, and 50L is just way too much.

The sigma 50 non art should be worth looking at for what you are saying and its prices should drop some now.

Not sure if posted but here's Digital Pictures comparison between Canon 50 1.2 vs Sigma 50 1.4 Art

As expected, the Signa blows the Canon out of the water even Sigma at F1.4 vs 50L at f/2.0

I was going to get the canon 50mm f1.2 L but I think you changed my mind after looking at the comparision .

Not to start anything, but I've owned the Sigma (x2) and the Canon (x2) f/1.4's and the lowly
canon f/1.8 mkII and this is what I'm doing now. I shoot mainly people in and out of the studio, so not demanding. For what I do, the f/1.8 II is all that I need. Mine (actually my wife's, lol, but I can use it if i'm nice to her ;) ) is accurate from wide open, reasonably sharp and not very loud or "buzzy" as some report. It's 10 years old and works great.

I would really enjoy a "decent" f/1.4 fifty, and by decent I mean one that focuses consistently, quietly and (relatively) quickly. it's not hard or expensive to do. (Look at the 85mm f/1.8 or even my 28-105 - both prosumer lenses that meet those specs.) I'm not looking for the finest in optics - so no L's or "Arts" for me apparently. But the Canon 50mm f/1.4 is seriously outdated and needs a refresh yesterday.

In the end, I refuse to spend more than $500 on a 50mm. Given that and considering the offerings, I will stick with my f/1.8 II until someone comes up with what I think is a reasonable alternative. YMMV

it's great you like the lens, but lets be real, the difference between the thrifty 50 and a 50L or 50A is huge.

He's not saying that there isn't a significant difference, but that it's hard to justify the lack of a quality option in the $500 range.

It looks to be a very sharp and impressive lens but its a big heavy 50mm prime. If they make a 135 it will be as heavy as a 70-200 2.8.

Absolutely. Especially regarding price, and of course the L and Art are better performers. But I don't need L or Art quality. For me it's a principle thing (and practicality - I don't use a 50mm enough to justify spending a grand on a lens). Truthfully, I don't really like the 50mm f/1.8 II (except for the performance/$ ratio), but it will serve most of my needs until Canon can come up with a replacement for their current f/1.4 offering. The Sigma f/1.4s that I had were no better overall than their Canon counterparts.

I'm gonna have to sit down with the 1.8 II and the 1.4 (since I have both) and see just how much difference there is in performance, since I haven't used the 1.8II in a while. But, if memory serves, the 1.8II should handle my needs (the main one being a lens that can consistently and accurately focus at wide open). As I recall, my 1.8II is at least as accurate as my f/1.4...

One last thing, I just moved from a 1DsII to a 1DsIII, so now I have micro-adjust. I'll see if that will make a difference in focus reliability.

If it's 1.4, I can live with that ;)

Sigma Art absolutely SPANKS the 50L. The F1.4 graph of the Sigma looks like the f2.8 graph on the 50L.

Who knows, maybe Sigma will finally get Canon off their butts on making better 50mms...

What would that do? If canon offered an optically equivilant lens, would you still buy that for $2000 with the sigma 50 in existence?

The track record is anything that optically good will not be $600.....

The size bothers me more than the weight, it will look too intimidating for the focal range, but if that is the negative on it I can roll with it.
