Huh...a lot of these samples aren't particularly impressive.

Some of the ones on flickr are. There's a link somewhere in one of the half-dozen 50A threads.

edit:

edit II: ah, I see that that link was posted on the previous page in this thread, too. In any event, I think that some of the motorcycle/automotive shots are pretty impressive.

Yea I'm not seeing it either. They're not very inspiring photographs but hopefully it's not the lens. Hopefully some better samples will be out soon.

I have Sigma 35 mm, I like it a lot. 50 mm is not what I am using, but I really-really want them to produce the 85 mm F/1.4 ART:-)

I'm just waiting for a direct objective comparison with the otus on iq. Anyone know of one?

SLRgear has... Compared them. They basically said the IQ is nearly indistinguishable between them.

Okay I was annoyed at fstoppers for not allowing me to view full sized images. I found some though, you're all welcome :)

I'm a lot more impressed now looking at those. The microcontrast looks great.

The bokeh is nothing surprising. It's very much Sigma. No 50L/85L here imo, looks exactly like an exact mix between the Sigma 35 and 85.

Makes it much more of a choice really. You want the microcontrast and sharpness? Get the Sigma. You want the bokeh get the 50L.

It would be more welcome if you'd adhere to the site rules and not post huge photos. Just a link to the photos is enough, thanks.

People choose lens that on par with each others usually over preference on how the lens produce the images... It is less about which lens is better, I think, but more like "I like the way this lens produce this kind of ....." or for this much $$$, it is good ..... no?

Damn... If only Sigma can stop the crazy AF shift in artificial light. That was the ONLY flaw of the 35 art, but enough that it has put a sour enough taste in my mouth from trying another (I tried two), until I hear otherwise. And I have read a few recent reviews still talking about that issue on brand new 35's... So I guess it has not been fixed/solved yet.

Bummer... Because this 50 looks like it will be so good.

not a problem with most.

And I have to say: A vocal minority does not represent the majority. Im sure there were problems. Probably still are. But a handful of people who have posted images complaining about the 35A were shooting at 1.4 1/30 or ISO3200, f1.4 on a windy day across their yard. Thats garbage data, but as soon as someone reads that some one whom we know nothing about shoots a soft image at 1.4 1/30, its a lens problem.

It’s true, with the release of this Sigma, all photos taken with inferior 50mm lenses, particularly the 50L, will be rendered unpresentable, absolutely dreadful.

Or…most modern lenses are very good—-for that matter, most older lenses are too.

Some offer different things, like autofocus for some people or aperture rings for others (like me), but in the end, it’s what the photographer finds sufficient for their needs or wants that matters.

Choice is always good, so plaudits for Sigma offering another option, apparently combining high quality with what some apparently consider a reasonable price. And from some of the reactions that I’ve read on this thread, I reckon Kleenex should also be happy with its associated surge in sales as well.

But in the end, I’m quite confident that I can still find a number of excellent photos taken with a 50 f/1.8.

This is too level headed, too practical. Therefore I will discredit you per internet camera forum protocol...:)

Depends on the lens. For something ultra high resolution like this very few people really can take advantage or even see the difference between two such good lenses like this and the otus in the final product. People may not like me saying this but the vast majority of people are buying this lens because they lust after it, not cause they need that much resolution. That's my opinion.

People are buying this lens cause it is one of the best. It's really hard to look at two pictures and say one "renders" that much differently, especially between two technically great lenses. And beyond that if it's that hard to see a difference most people surely can't see a difference when they print the pic. I mean hell there are tons of oof pics on other threads that the original author didnt even know was out of focus.

Anyway for those that really need this lens the numbers are important I would say.
