I own a 70D & was shooting with a 5D2 last week.
The 70D is way better at the whole focus tracking/speed thing [mine is out but that is another thread]. The 5D2 focus system is not the best, hard to grab the right spot for you composition some of the time & it's really slow in comparison to the 70D but the images are very nice from the FF sensor.

If you shoot your kids indoors, in low light or at high ISO the cameras are about the same [ok, the 5D2 is better but not by much, imo] but you'll fit your kids in the frame on the 5D2 easier. Buy a wide angle lens like amfoto1 says and save the full frame want for the next upgrade

Also I've never had as SD card fail, had CF card go down mid shoot...

Due to physical abuse/failure though?

There'll always be random failures of chips or circuitry and those can affect any format of card. What I was referring to was the physical construction of the cards, in which regard SD feels like a cheap, flimsy toy compared to CF.

There was physical abuse after the card failed :)

Yea Vertigo1 I know what you mean they do feel a bit flimsy alright. I'm usually kind to my gear though, cards go from case to camera and back so not really a bother for me.
(Fun game to play: open the door of your camera push down on the SD card and flick your finger off really fast. First one to get the card in the pint glass wins. Looser drinks the pint.)

The 5D2 is about 3/4 to 1 stop better at higher ISOs, just so we have something a bit more quantitative. :)

SD is horrid. The cards are so flimsy it's unbelievable. I like CF cards because they're built like tanks. SD is for MP3 players, proper DSLRs use CF :p :D

Man, what do you do to your cards? ;)

Thanks for all the comments everyone. The 70d really does sound like the better camera for me at the moment. The FF image quality is just so tempting. And I guess I'm a snob, but I just don't really want to invest in EF-S lenses. I think I'll live with my 70d until the 5d3 becomes more affordable to me used.

Outdoors in a good light you'll hardly see the difference. Summer is coming, just go use your 70D and enjoy it.

I'm actually thinking about buying a 700D or even SL1 at the moment because I'm sick of carrying my 5D3 all the time...

What about the 70d focusing problems when using fast lenses?

70D has much better in-camera jpeg engine on ISO 6400 than 5dmkII for example, RAW is very similar... 70D has much better AF system and lot of features...

Newer tech is better, but if you really need FF and you know why, i would take 6D, if you don´t have money for 5dmkIII.

The same site ranks the 6D above the 5D3 - tells you everything you need to know about the value of their ratings tbh.

Snapsort is the YUGO of equipment review sites. Or maybe the Trabant.

Those have noise reduction applied and are not the pure raw to JPG without NR. I have been doing raw ISO comparisons for years, and can quickly see that. They also keep changing things like props, camera positions, software used, and even exposure seems different than when the 5D2 was shot 6 years ago. There are more differences than similarities between the two. Not a great back to back comparison.

it´s the best direct comparison available.
i already mentioned this in my post - these test pictures are in camera jpegs... jpeg-engine is clearly better in 70D, it should be after these years...

RAW files should be more equal of course... minor differences can be easily erased by different lenses and slightly different light conditions or camera settings can change everything.

I agree on that.

There are better comparisons. DPReview, for example, shares the raw files. They also just redid all their comparison shots with the new studio. The site for the ones above changed the mannequin position, props on the tables, the camera position, lighting, and even software through the years. It is a nice gesture on their part, but goes against any scientific process for comparison.

70D, hands down - the 5D Mk II does nothing (and I do mean nothing, including high ISO) better than the 70D except a wider FoV for a given lens.

The FF image quality is just so tempting.

You do not get "better" IQ from old FF sensors than from new crop sensors.
