Turning camera power off when removing CF or SD card

This is kind of a random question, but does everyone turn their camera body off when removing or inserting a Compact Flash or Secure Digital card from their camera?

I was thinking of just leaving the camera on, wait for it to finish writing, and ejecting the card so I can move my cards around faster and I don't have to keep flipping that switch off and on and off again to format the card after I've ingested my images from the card.

I don't. I just remove it when I need to. But I make sure nothing is being written while I do it.

I think the vast majority just wait for the write to finish and swap cards. I'm pretty sure that the act of opening the card door is enough to prepare the card for ejection. It's actually the act of opening the card door during a write that causes the error not actually removing the card. It specifically mentions card door in the manuals for both my 300D and 20D.

My three bodies remain on unless being transported. Lens changes, card swaps, pulling the batteries for charging; the on/off switches are seldom moved.

Opening the card door automatically turns the camera off, irrespective of the On-Off switch position. That's what the micro-switch on the door is for.

With newer cameras, opening the memory card does nothing if files are being written to the card. A message is displayed on the LCD screen: "! Close Memory Card Slot Cover Recording...... Remaining Images: (X)

My 60D does this, and it is four years old. I would think everything since the T2i behaves this way. It is just a warning not to actually eject the card, yet. The camera will finish the write with the door open, as long as you leave the card in place.

I think all cameras since 2008 (XSi/450D, 40D,5D Mk II, and 1D Mk III) have this feature.

I never turn the camera off to change cards.... and sometimes I do a dozen or more card changes in a day's shoot.

In fact I rarely turn the camera off, mostly only do so to make the camera go into self-cleaning mode.

Wow! And yet the card-door thing persists. I had an XSi, but don't remember even trying this feature.

After all these comments, it sounds like I don't have to turn the camera off every time I remove the card. Cool, I was hoping that was the case. I didn't like flipping that power switch all the time.

You DO turn the camera off every time you remove the card. There's an interlock on the memory card door that powers down the camera when it is opened. It performs the same function as the power switch.

They actually came in 2007, but apart from that it's correct.

Vertigo1 you're not alone, I'm with you on this. I know it's such a hard extra thing to do, flipping that on/off switch. I mean it's such a distance away from the card door..:)
