We all know that if you get a job to shoot something that little voice in you says "Check with the guys at PoTN and see how much I should charge". It is everything from Menu Imagery to cover shots of magazines.

So what I am proposing to do, or a mod can if they so choose to do so, is to create a price guide. The way I will do this is to ask anyone who wishes to contribute to send me via Private Message your actual experiences and prices you have received.

I will compile a list, by catagory and then break it down to HIGH - LOW - AVERAGE pricing based upon what you give me.

If you wish to to submit please give the following info

Catagory........such as magazine, newspaper, menu, ad space, billboard etc etc.

Circulation.....the number printed for a magazine, brochure, menu, billboard.

Size.....the actual size of the final use of the image, if known.

Quantity....the number submitted vs number used.

Period....the time limits if any of use of the images.

Copyright.....did you keep it or sell it.

Price....what was the actual dollar amount you received for the above uses.

Time charged....the actual/estimated time you spent on the job.

Frequency....how often do you do a job such as this one.

Location...list the state and city/town.

I want to keep an eye out for someone who does a shoot for a guy and gets $200 for 3 images and has only done it once vs someone who charges $475 for 1 image but does one or two a month. If John Doe got $200 once and 5 other guys averaged $650, I want to make note that that $200 was a one off job by an inexperienced shooter in that field. Nothing wrong with that but I want to make sure that your not selling yourself short.
I will list the highest price I receive and the lowest. Then, if say I get five in between those two, I will average the five out and list that as an average price.

One thing I don't want to get into tho is pricing portrait work. You can call a local studio to find that info or check their website and those prices will vary so much from town to town within a state let alone across a region or the nation.

All information I am given will be kept confidential except for the pricing but I will not reveal who gave me what or where they are from.

In the end, instead of having to post a "What kind of price should I charge" thread you will be able to look at the Price Guide and get a general idea of what you can expect in the way of pricing. All pricing will be done in US Dollars.

I will accept PM's until March 1, 2006. I will begin to compile the info and hopefully have it posted by mid March.

So, anyone interested?

Excellent timing. I just did my taxes. :( I think I'm going to dive into a photography business this year. I could use the help and I've already put down almost $10k in gear... so... what to charge is one of many questions I will have.

I'm all for it too but I don't have any real world experience to provide pricing. I'm still trying to figure out what to charge so I'm in no place to say "yeah well I make $XX.00 for X0X0."

cdi-ink I don't want guys like you to provide info, it is for guys like you I am doing this for. You may benefit from it, and that is the whole reason behind this.

RFM PM on the way. Up late editing for a 6am deadline so I will be up for a while still.

Cover: $690
Spread: $460
Full: $230
3/4 : $200
1/2 : $175
1/4 : $145
Spot: $100

Freelance NUJ rates from the UK...

Might be worth adding to the mix Jeff... the prices quoted are minima... but they cover newspapers, magazines, books, PR work etc.

I would be grateful if something could be included covering the web usage of images. It's one area where there doesn't seem to be a huge amount of resource out there to refer to.

Cheers,

Simon.

Great idea, Jeff! I can't contribute prices as, being semi-retired, my prices are way out of date & the jobs haven't been for publication. Here are a few links to threads that provide "added value" to this thread:

sdommin thanks for that info but, NG is not exactly what I am looking for. I want info which may be used by members. Not that anyone here can't get a shot in NG but, it is unlikely and if NG would contact them, NG would tell you what they will pay. Most major publications have set rates based and quote you the rates. SI bases their rates on ad space sold for that issue. One month you may get $350 of a spot and the next month $175 for a half page. Those rates are usually better than what a novice would have asked for anyway. Those rates you listed are good because it can show the differnce in top of the industry vs midrange and low circualtion magazines.

Gmen, man I pondered doing pricing to include UK and EU but, that would be way too hectic and more of a task than I care to take on at this time. Someone who has a better knowledge of UK & EU rates would be better off to do that end of it. In the mean time, users in Europe can convert dollars to pounds, francs, Euros or marks or whatever their form of currency is and probably get a good ballpark figure to go by.
Gmen, would you be willing to take on the European version of this task? LOL Gmen, Gemn are you still there?
