I'm looking into moving to a full-frame body such as the 5D, but first I need a lens to go with it. I'd also like the lens to be useful on my current camera, the 600D (crop, in my signature). Budget is 1k and open to non-Canon lenses. This will be my first "nice" lens. Interests are portraiture, followed by architectural and landscape. Any suggestions?

  • One thought is a 2.8/70-200mm (2.8 sorely needed for DoF control on a crop).
  • Another is a UWA in the EF mount.
  • And of course there is the 2.8/24-70mm.
  • And never forget a ~85mm prime!

Any particular reason to move to FF? IMO, it is not always necessary. I do not have a FF body.

It really depends on what you shoot, if you shoot inside, with low light situations and/or want a wider shots then, yes go FF, otherwise your current body or new 70D, 7D mk2 will be a great upgrade for anyone with rebels,
For the lens again what are you trying to achieve? You seems all over the place, 70-200, 24-70 & 85 prime! These are a very different lens and each have a different purpose,
Just for argument sake I'll throw 24-105L to the mix. Its one of the cost/performance lens out there, check digitalrev TV YouTube video pro DSLR + cheapo lens vs cheapo DSLR + pro lens

5D for the ML firmware, and video ability. FF for lowlight ability. Also, I'd really like a camera where I can actually go above ISO 800 :)

Yeah, a 24-105 would be one to look at. And the 200/2.8 if you want something longer but still fast enough for indoors.

I would be in the camp that maybe you should buy two nice lenses instead of a body and one lens, since glass holds its value a lot better.

However if you want to try FF with a 5D, as mentioned above the 24-105 was released alongside it, is very versatile, and affordable.

Heya,

With 1K and what you mentioned:

Tokina 16-28mm F2.8 PRO
Rokinon/Samyang 85mm F1.4 (fully manual, but very nice lens) (alt: 50 F1.4)

Very best,

Buy your glass used or refurbished and save some decent money, IMO.

Of course! I plan on buying here on the forums, if I can. Best prices around!

What are the pros/cons of the 24-105L vs. the 24-70L? Any Tamrons/Sigmas I should look?

Sigma 35 1.4 Art is excellent and Sigma 50 1.4 is going to be even better from what I have read.
