My wife recently bought me a Tamron F-series 1.4X TC. A couple days ago I heard an approaching airliner flying at about 25,000 feet. I had to quickly swap lenses and add the TC. By this time the plane was past the optimum point but what the heck I shot it anyway.
I used center point auto focus and it was hand held.
TV 1/500
AV f/5.6
I'm happy with it so far and a darn sight cheaper than Canon.
Oh yeah, this is a 100% center crop with one straightening pass with Picasa2.

Quite impressive. And I think you caught it at the optimum moment. You get to see the engines agains the sky from this angle.

Thanks Panza I would have liked to caught him about 30 seconds sooner.
Here is a hand held photo of a fire lookout perched on Buck Rock overlooking Kings Canyon. It was probably five miles or more away. I used a monopod on this one. I had to shoot through a small gap in the branches of a tree.
I have actually been up in that lookout. The view is spectacular but not for those suffering from vertigo.

Skip, how do you like the 1.4x with the DO? In the copy I had, it didn't impress much. I'm curious of users with this combo how they like it.

So far so good. It maintains auto focus though it does not report itself. (DID you tell mommy everything???) The two above images were pushing it pretty much to the limit and I am satisfied with both. It gives me excellent reach in a very compact package. I believe this will do until I get a 100-400 L IS

I would not replace the 70-300 DO + 1.4X TC with the 100-400 L. I would just add the 100-400 L to the arsenal. The beauty of the DO set up is that it is sooo compact, the perfect long lens for ready transport on my bike.
