Hello everyone! A bit of a strange thread here! :)

I'll preface my question by saying that I hunt. Yes, I do eat what I shoot, and I do my best to make clean, humane kills with as little pain as possible for the animal.

Anyways. I've been wanting to video my hunts, and I'm wanting to mount a camera on my gun. Now, I do have an older model GoPro, but it's nothing great, and then new ones are just a bit too expensive for me right now.

That got me thinking: would the shock of a gun's recoil (Perhaps a 12 gauge shotgun) be strong enough to harm a camera? Say, a T2i mounted directly on the gun?

I'm really not sure about it, and I thought I'd get your input before I tried it.

So what do you say? Too strong, or go for it? I really don't fancy ruining a camera. ;)

Thanks in advance!
-Darin

I wonder if the video editors on The Titanic ever went, "Sorry, I can't right now. I'm busy synching the Titanic..."

Try mounting your camera on your hat, aimed for where the shotgun is pointing.

This is how I envision that one going. ;)

Well, perhaps that might be a wee bit over the top....

I wouldn't put a dslr on a shotgun...too many delicate moving parts. By the way, I vibration and shock test things for a living, and I know my way around guns.

Sell your old GoPro on Ebay, and buy a new one

Don't be penny wise and dollar foolish

I definitely think a 12 ga. would harm a dSLR. With the weight and bulk of the T2i, and my recollections of using a 12 gauge, the camera probably won't remain affixed to the gun.

The gopro field of view will be way to wide to capture anything interesting anyway, unless you are shooting in the 5-10m range

This was kinda the way I was leaning...

That was kinda in the back of my head- but there's always that stupid little voice that says, 'try it!' ;)

Well, the 3+ has a nice crop mode, so it isn't nearly as wide angle...

Thanks for the advice everyone. I don't think I'll try it. :)

I would only use a gopro or the like anyways for something like this. Just the weight of any DSLR would be a PITA on a long arm. Even my Hero2 has the ability to narrow the FOV.

Some years back I made measurments to see how big the acceleration on a weapon was - because there where problems with the pure electronic camera (no moving mechanics).
But this was a bigger projectile, and I do not remember exact enough - and would not tell details.

So I would reccomend a special optimized camera - or a kind of damping mechanism.

I was going to suggest a gopro as well.

Wearing that get up would guaranty no photos of your hunt. Any game would see you coming for miles. Well, you might get a shot at something laughing so hard it forgot to flee. :D

I agree with the others that a 12 gauge would probably do more harm than good to your camera. Good luck with whatever you attempt.
